Hockey Shooters Needed - 02-10-2011, 09:36 AM

Hey guys, I have a few tournaments coming up including one next weekend 18-20. I pay 50% of all the print profits you bring in for 30 days after the tournament. I also fully train before I let you go on your own. Hockey is the most difficult sport to shoot and you will learn a ton no matter how long you have been shooting outdoor sports.

You can check out my website and click on the hockey links to see some past tournaments.

I have very high minimum equipment standards in order to be able to shoot and upload for online sales with minimal to no post processing. I fully process after sales have been made. I have exclusive access to almost every large tournament in DFW so the hockey families know where to find the photos!

Minimum requirements are a Canon 7d but prefer a 1d3/4 or d700 for Nikon, 200 2.8 but prefer 300 2.8. You will also need a wide angle in 20-50 range for team photos and flash with cto gel (which I will provide if you do not have one) for after championship games but not absolutely necessary to shoot earlier games.
You really need a laptop to backup your photos and keep on top of your files, I prefer mac. You should also have LR3 but that is not an absolute requirement but suggest you download a trial as it will save you a ton of time in the long run.

I will teach you everything from proper white balance, exposure, getting non action shots that sell, keep yourself safe and give you all kinds of tips to help boost sales.

PM me with any questions, I also have room for tag alongs if you want to come and learn if you do not meet the minimum requirements.

I will be at a number of hockey games this weekend starting tomorrow night so if you are interested do not wait until next weekend or you will be training when you could be earning money.

oh and you do not have to shoot all weekend if you want to shoot for a shift or a couple of games to see if it is for you, you are welcome to come out as well. First tournament is mostly house league so the games will be a bit slower and easier to cover.

Look forward to shooting this weekend. Do you still need shooters?

I still have a spot or two left, mostly need Saturday I think. I have not broken down the whole schedule as I have a few that said they are shooting but have not got me exact availability(BRET). I am trying to make a pro body and 300 2.8 the requirement for this tournament since we have so many that meet that level. I have not had any interest in tag-alongs this tournament. If anyone getting into shooting sports but do not meet the requirements it is a really good opportunity to pick our brains and practice shooting the greatest game on earth!

I have team shoots tonight and tomorrow night and will do one on ones with the right person to get them ready.

Nice pics. Just curious, is a 400mm 2.8 IS on a 5D Mark II too much for shooting hockey? What ISO, Aperture and shutter speed are you generally shooting?

sounds like he needs you at higher FPS versus more FL.

Actually FPS is not too important to me I prefer quality over quantity. FPS is nice at times but I actually tone down my 10 frames to 7 or 8 and only go 10 in a shootout. My shooting style has me shooting 1 frame at a time more often than not and when it is more I am deleting repeat frames in camera. I do a lot of in camera editing as I want to go from camera to website and keeping people engaged is easier if you keep the gallery interesting with unique shots. Now that being said I have shot a 400 with a 1D and it is a bit too long to be honest at most venues and the 5d is more a problem with focus speed than FPS but full frame would make it a bit shorter, it would be challenging but a lot of fun. I think I would get great joy out of shooting a few games full frame on a 400! We also have venues at large arenas and you can shoot over the boards from the stands. We have tournaments at Allen Event Center and Drperpper Arena.

I have a 5d as well but I never use it for action. You are welcome to come try it out on Saturday if you are free. I require a training session with me before you go on your own and may not have room this tournament for you to go solo but if you come Saturday you can be a backup for Saturday afternoon and Sunday and certainly considered for next tournament. To be honest I am buried and I do not have time for this tournament so I would love to get some people to train and may turn you loose that day to shoot for me while I take care of other things! I have tuned the scheduling over to Rob and letting him decide how many shooters we need. He is looking at trying to cover every team at least once and all the finals games. We are meeting tonight at plano to go over details and if someone wants to shoot or be on the list for next tournament (which is in two weeks) would be a really good idea to show up. PM me for details.

After I posted I recalled the 1D Mark IV has a 1.3 sensor (so the 300mm actually = 390mm). Wish I had the time to shoot hockey.

The 5D Mark II is a pain shooting sports but I've adapted. When I need to get the shot for sure, I'll use the 7D. Generally 5D pics are better quality than the 7D, but under some conditions I actually prefer the 7D. Wish Canon would do a full frame 7D in the $3000 price area (need full frame for the 400mm, it is a monster).

Your pictures are excellent. I reviewed several of your galleries. Good luck with your tournaments!
