Especially if you're the umpire!

After a winter of basketball, I'm ready for something different, but just like the athletes, I sure was rusty my first time out this year to shoot softball/baseball.

When did you say football starts?

Umpire is just a little distracted. Great for the first time out, love the emotion you captured.

Thanx for the kudos, Mark, but I disagree. Its not a good shot at all - I just thought it was fun to note that the umpire wasn't looking at the ball.

In case you are wondering why the shot is framed so poorly, I was shooting a 300 with a 2X extender from the outfield fence - - and it is really windy here today - hard to keep the lens pointed where I wanted it. Since I didn't turn it in to the editor, I didn't bother doing any fancy cropping on it.

Nice shot Doug.

What I see in your photo:
A) Batter has already determined the pitch is a ball because bat is sitting on back on the shoulder and the front leg and hips aren't moving. But then again, she could be waiting to slap the ball to right.

B) The umpire is wondering why the heck isn't the catcher at least trying to stick the mit out to attempt to catch the pitch. The umpire is in a very protective stance. As if a cup may not be enough of protection.

You're right - and I think the image is the result of where I was shooting. I had a 2x extender on my 300, shooting from behind the right field fence. I hadn't thought of it before, but where is the catcher? Hmmmm. You can just barely see her red right shoe. Maybe the ump was wondering if she was going to catch the ball.

All in fun.

Know what you mean about being rusty (and keeping eye on the ball). My situational awareness wasn't sharp.

I shot my 1st games of the seson Saturday with a high school tournament. I was shooting on the field behind 3rd base against the fence. One play, the right fielder was getting a ball and going to throw it in. Play was at the plate so I shifted my attention there; she threw it right into my under my butt. Should have been more aware of what she was doing, players are still rusty too.
