Baseball Shooters...WARNING - 03-05-2011, 11:34 AM

In yesterday's game between Cypress Creek and Friendswood the infield umpire took a line drive into the face (cheekbone area). He went down so fast I literally thought it killed him. After a few minutes he was able to get up and with a little help walked off the field. They completed the game with only one umpire. I do not have any more to report other than he was sitting behind the fence for awhile with an ice pack to his face. He left before the game was over and I did not get to talk to him.

Yup.. see it happen a lot. Year before last, a Grand Prairie Air Hogs player took a line drive to the left eye socket while he watched from the dugout... nearly lost his eye. He's doing fine now.. and is a batting coach and one of the faces of the team.

Hopefully he's only bruised up. As an athletic trainer, two of the scariest moments I had to deal with occurred in baseball. A line drive hit our pitcher in the chest. He dropped to his knees and then fell flat on his face. The pitcher was okay. Had the breath knocked out of him and most likely his heart skipped a beat. The other time, a batter went to bunt and caught a fastball right in the eye. The batter's eye was alright but the bone below was crushed.

Those stinking dangerous aluminum bats need to go. I heard there is a new bat, with a core and sounds like wood and will have much less power, Colllege is supposed to use it this year and High School next year.

I sure hope this is true. My son has a titannium plate in his chin from getting hit with a pitch (Split his chin in half) and then the following year took a line drive to the face again while pitching, didn't break his chin again but sent him to the ground and had a blood lace on his chin. Those bats are far too dangerous and should be outlawed, hope it doesn't take someone getting killed first.

Aluminum Bats Safety In Youth Baseball

If you want to see a ball rocket off a bat, use a bamboo bat.

Little League bats have been limited for several years.

Yeah, baseball can be a very dangerous sport. I don't know if you heard about Luis Salazar, one of the Atlanta Braves minor league coaches, who took a line drive to the face during a spring training game a couple of weeks ago, but it looks like he will be ok to coach again.

Thank you for posting this. The reason they only allow the Aluminum Bats is because they are proven to be safer than wooden bats.

Getting hit by a baseball in a baseball game is an inherent risk, I think it is just absolutely crazy to hear about someone suing a bat maker and Little League for their kid getting hit...

If the parent were truly worried about their kid getting hit, and not the $$, they would never have let the kid play in the first place.

Well wood or aluminum.. ask Cliff Lee about wooden bats.. after he got a part of one in ear, and nearly a chunk of it in his neck.

I heard a new bat is on the way, it is still aluminum but with some kind of core that will take away some of the velocity from the all aluminum. Plus it will sould like wood as real baseball should. I would agree about wood, when they split, you can be impaled if you are in the path.

Yup. These are the new BBCOR certified bats. They are required for NCAA this year and for high school next year. They behave a lot more like a wooden bat. Don't know if/when they will become a requirement for age divisions under high school.

The argument at hand is silly.. saying an aluminum bat is more dangerous/deadly than a wooden bat is like saying a .45 is more dangerous than a .38 ... any bat has the potential to create a deadly projectile.

The point is that you have to keep your head in the game ... ANY game ... when you're shooting from the sidelines. Baseballs flying, bats flying, football players crashing into the sidelines, basketball players coming down on top of photographers.... its all dangerous.

The POINT is if you are shooting sports, pay attention.

I got hit with a line-drive a few years back covering North Shore. I just let it go like it didn't hurt, but man when I got home that evening. I wanted to cry! I had a huge bruise in the inner part of my leg.

My very first Astros game I had a line drive smack off the photo pit pole about 4 inches above my head, I'm just glad it didn't hit my camera lol
