I was at Rice yesterday for my son's piano lesson and was treated to some very entertaining fencing matches. The youngsters were quite good.

Nice! My daughter took up fencing last year ... these pics make me realize I have yet to capture any images of it. I like the choice of b/w.

Thank you Valerie. You should definitely bring your camera to a fencing event. It should be quite interesting with your TLR.

Foil is the style of fencing they were doing. It's actually quite a fun sport. Good captures of the lunges. Saber (another style) is IMO more interesting and fun to both watch and do. There are 3 different types and the rules and areas you can attack are different for each.

Is this open to the public? Would love to go watch a few matches... (I think I even still own my old gear lol).

Thanks for the info Chris. It was open to the public, as far as I know.

Valerie, tell her to keep at it. My son had a girl friend in high school who got a fencing scholarship to Stanford! Of course, she was smart as a whip too, top 5 at a very competitive high school, but still, it was an athletic scholarship, not an academic one.

Great captures, Tri. My nephew is also a fencer, but he's in CT, so I've never gotten to see him compete.

Very nice! My son fences and I always love getting the nice lunge shots where you can see the blade bent. Shows you just how hard and fast those weapons move and when you freeze the point of impact like that, you understand why he always has bruises. LOL In fact, I believe one of those kids is from his fencing club.

Valerie - which club does your daughter fence with?

Chris - the tournaments are usually open to the public. You can go to FRED: Fencing Tournaments :: Home and search for upcoming tournaments. Houston is in the Gulf Coast division.

My daughter is with Alliance (Woodlands studio). She has only been at it a few months. I really do need to remember my camera....!
