First Lacrosse game to shoot - 04-10-2011, 09:04 PM

Critique: CC:

I have been given the privilege of shooting the sports teams for a High School here in Houston. This was my first time doing High School sports let alone Lacrosse. Let me know the truth about how they are. Thanks and Enjoy.

These were all shot with a Canon 1D3 300mm f/4

I think you did very well first time out. Did you read up about the sport and look up photos done by other people?

I started shooting lacrosse last year and enjoy it. I cover Kinkaid quite a bit so I'll probably see you out on the sidelines.

You did a very good job capturing the play.

I've been shooting my daughter's high-school LaCrosse for a 3 years. I have learned more about the game (still have to shake my head sometimes) and more importantly grew to know the individual girls and their style, strengths and personality on the field. The game has become not only more fun to shoot but most of the time I can anticipate the movement of the ball and players.

Stick (pun intended) with it, it'll get to be more interesting.

Thanks Tri: I read up on it as much as I could in my hour lunch break at work. I kind of found out about it the same day I got to shoot it so did some really quick research.

Jason: I am gonna be out there probably every Tuesday night that the Mens Varsity plays. If your around come say hi, enjoy meeting fellow photogs.

Ray: Ya I really never knew anything about the sport till this shoot and found it very interesting. I'll definitely keep with it as it's enjoyable shooting sports to me.

To all: I got some great comments from another member here who shoots lacrosse a lot and will make some of the changes he pointed out and then repost them tonight after I get home from work. So, keep posted for the edited versions.

Thanks for the reviews and input.

Two things to focus on that are universal for all sports:
1. The eyes.
2. The ball.

Doesn't matter what sport you are shooting, get the eyes and the ball (if there is one) for your most powerful shots.

And yes, there are great shots without one or both. But focus on that.

You did really well overall. I like the emotion in #1 but it seems a little blurred. #2 has the player in the front blurry. If he was in focus, this would be a really nice shot. #3 is good showing the action. The only complaint here is you can't really see anyones face. #4 is probably the weakest of the group. It only shows the players backs and is blurred. If that shot was coming at you... winner.

TC: yup yup I tried following the ball.. lol... found it very challenging haha.

Bob: Thanks. i'll admit they aren't the sharpest as I was shooting at a high ISO to keep the shutter speed up and toned back some of the grain in PP.

I understand what yall are saying about showing the faces... however, (like in number 3) I feel that you still get a since of the action as the ball in on the ground and they are fighting for it. The elbow to the other players face adds to the struggle.

I appreciate the input and hopefully tomorrow will wield better results.
