Critique: NC:

I've long been an advocate of using what I've always referred to as "real" cameras. You know, digital SLR cameras or high end point and shoot cameras with the modularity to be able to add flashes, lenses, or other accessories.

About a month ago, I was asked to work on a magazine assignment with fellow photogs and the instructions were simple - instead of high end cameras, use an Iphone. I was a bit intimidated at first but after a while, using the camera phone, with all of it's limitations, was a bit liberating. No switching lenses, no off camera flash... Just a simple camera that required me to work with the confines of the camera and be creative in an unconventional way.

Below are a few images from the shoot. Using a variety of apps, all of the pictures you see are EXACTLY how they came out of the phone. Since then, I've been amazed at what the little phone can do and there are definitely more to come.

I totally agree Russell. I found using just my iPhone I was forced to concentrate on subject matter and composition.

Great work, Russell, and it goes to show that the creativity and experience of the photographer can make terrific use of just about any equipment.

Yeah, I imagine as long as it records what you see that you can do spectacular things with it Russell. Nice array of effects!

AWESOME work Russell!
I also LOVE my IPHONE and the apps, I don't know which ones you have but I have about 5 apps that I use! I also use a powerful mini LED light with a napkin or white hanky to turn the flash light into a SOFTBOX and it works AWESOME!

later.....

Proof positive that its not the camera nor the lens.....but the guy or gal holding the equipment that makes all the difference.

Great series, Russell. Really nice photo work.

Its a much more intimate camera than a DSLR... but they do go as proof that its composition more than equipment that makes a photo.

They are still a long way from replacing more complicated equipment... but as Chase Jarvis says - the best camera is the one that's with you.
