FNL's.., or deep, dark, dungeon? - 09-24-2011, 04:42 PM

Critique: CC:

Last night I covered football, at what turned out to be the darkest stadium I've ever shot at. Here is a shot from the Mk IV @ ISO 8000, 1/500th and f/2.8 and the 70-200 mk II.

and one from the Mk III @ ISO6400, 1/400 and f/2.8 using the 400 f/2.8L IS

I don't like to shoot action at less that 1/400th. When I first picked up the Mk IV, I immediately started using it on the 400. But since it has more resolution, I moved it to the 70-200 so I can take advantage of it's higher resolution and ISO, if necessary.

Although, that doesn't help if you let the action get too close to you. Here's the 70-200 at 70mm.

Looks like I'm going to have to back away from the goal line if I want an image I can sell.

McCollum took the win, 38-7

Nearly every 2A stadium I shoot in is a dungeon. HS gymnasiums are worse. But the way I look at it, the worst of my shots are better than what Mom gets from the stands...

Your shots are nice, by the way.

Thanks!

I must be lucky. The gyms I usually shoot in are relatively bright. Most of the time I'm never over ISO 3200 and often at 1600. I set a CWB in them before I start shooting and already have calibration profiles for both gyms loaded into Lightroom, since one school's colors are purple and the other's is royal blue. Accurate colors help with photo sales. I build another calibration profile when I go somewhere new.

I'm also curious, do you use noise reduction like Noise Ninja? Your photos have a similar look to my when I use that filter in post - just wondering.

I'm using the native noise reduction in Lightroom.

I have some noise reduction actions for the mk III , to use in Photoshop, that utilize the neatimage noise reduction engine but have never run into a situation where the Lightroom noise reduction couldn't get the job done. Perhaps I should check it out again and see if it yields better results at iso 6400.
