I have a lot to learn about shooting football!

The a77 is going to be a great daylight sports camera thanks to great AF, impressive 24 MP resolution and good color rendition.

Under the lights - at high ISO - though it's not the best.
These are ISO 5000, f3.5:

Nice shots.

I'm jealous.

Looks like STHS got some new jerseys this year. Hard to believe they lost that one! I really thought they were going to be in the hunt for a district title this year.

Those are "throwback" jerseys - it was alumni night.

They should have won - 4 lost fumbles and one interception turned it around. It was a very even game.

Help me with PP these a77 files. - 10-27-2011, 06:42 PM

I'm loving the a77 but there's no doubt it is noisy at high ISOs. I'm trying to find the best processing for using these files because the AF speed and accuracy - not to mention the 12 fps - are too good to pass up.

These are ISO 5,000 at f3.5 and 1/640 sec.

No noise reduction:

My best effort with LR 3.5:

My initial attempt using Topaz Denoise 5 (which is new to me):

What do you think?

Obviously the Topaz is less noisy - but is it losing too much detail here or does this look good. Obviously the NR levels and detail levels are adjustable but I just want to know what you think looks good.

I'm open to suggestions.

Second looks fine. Third would probably be serviceable for the web or for personal use if you like the heavier noise reduction look.

Looking again the third would definitely work well for the web!

And yes I heard turnovers was the main storyline from the game. Did you meet our photographer that was here?

I did meet a photographer on the St. Thomas sideline who was shooting a Canon with 70-200 (I think) lens. We talked about the a77 a bit.

Topaz allows you to make reductions to just the red channel, which I did. If I turned down the general reduction it would be better, yes?

On the third one I don't know if it would make it better or not. It's been several years since I've messed with noise reduction.
