Anybody ever shot wrestling? - 11-07-2011, 04:31 PM

Critique: CC:

I've never shot wrestling before and I'm going to be shooting a high school match on Saturday. I know the lighting is going to be bad.

I'd appreciate any tips. Specifically what shutter speed is usually going to be fast enough for high school wrestling?

I have a Canon 1D4, a Sony a77, and a Sony a55.

I'm think the 1D4 with either my Sigma 24-70/2.8 HSM or Canon 85/1.8 is the best way to go if I can get fairly close. Otherwise my Canon 70-200/2.8 IS?

But do you usually shoot these things with flash? If so I'd probably rather use the a77.

Ideas and opinions appreciated!

I'm thinking 1d4 with the 70-200/2.8 and 85/1.8

If 2.8 isnt fast enough and you're close enough for the 85, you should be covered.

Thanks for the input. I'm going to go flashless and with the 1D4 and 70-200L. Then I'll have a better idea of what to do next time!

1D4 and 70-200L IS (old version). I was shooting in M with aperture at 2.8 and (for most of these) shutter at 1/500 and auto ISO. So the ISOs range from 3200 to 12,800.

Gary, I have not finished rebuilding my computer, have not adjusted monitors, but these I think much like your virgin football experience, have done well.

My first thought, as you have asked was why couldnt you use a flash pointed straight up or use your Gary Fong DOme?

Look great!

The ceiling is way too high for bouncing flash. I've tried it and it just doesn't help at all.
