Critique: NC:

Here are a few pics from the Round Rock-Pasadena Dobie match. I selected NC
because I wanted to show a few more photos, but any comments are welcome. I like the B&W version of the one shot, and am interested in what you think of B&W for sports.

I had a series of pics where I inadvertently changed the shutter speed to 1/500s. In the last pic specifically, do you think the softness of the player on the right adversely diminishes the photo?

Those are some excellent shots caught at the peak of action! a. I like the BW version better as well but I would probably crop out some of the dead space at the top of the image and b. I don't thing the softness on the last kills the shot, it may in some eyes make it not as strong as it could be but definitely a keeper.

The third shot I might try to clone out the sleeve or whatever the black is on the right side of the image. It is a bit distracting to me.

I have tried soccer and not done this well at it, looks like you were on the right side of the field at the right time to get good light.

Nice shots!

It looks to me like the softness you referred to in the last shot is mostly a result of that player being out of your depth of field rather than the motion blur. It looks like your focus target was the RR player and the Dobie player on the right was just a bit too close so he looks somewhat mushy (is that a word?). I don't think the motion itself is a problem.

As for B&W, it's not my cup of tea. That's just me.

Thanks, Patrick. I have to admit that I was too lazy to clone out that shadow of a person along the sideline shot. Processed too many pics on tournament weekend......by the last game I was just on auto pilot.

Gary, thanks for commenting. I initially thought that the right player was just out of focal range. But when I looked at the exif, I noticed the lower shutter speed, and the higher F stop. And the player still looked pretty close to the RR player. However the more I think about it, I think you are correct. This was one of a burst of shots.....perhaps the players were moving forward, and the right player drifted out of the front boundary of the depth of field defined by the intial point of focus.
