Another Sports Poster - 02-10-2012, 11:38 AM

Critique: CC:

My son's basketball team went 10-0 and won the City tournament and the District championship so I thought I would put together a poster for his coach. The Husky pic was purchased from iStock in case anyone wondered.

Any thoughts or CC is appreciated!

Patrick,

You are off to a good start. I have a few suggestion you can try.
  1. The first thing I notice is the Husky. I believe the emphasis should be placed on the players and not the animal. Drop the opacity of the Husky and enlarge the photos of the players.
  2. I would add some sort of border around the images. Nothing fancy but maybe a 3px-7px white border to match the white outline of the text.
  3. Add a slight drop shadow to the images. This will add some depth to the over all look.
  4. The text vertically positioned on the right - It's difficult to read rotated in that orientation. I would also reduce tracking & kerning.

Thank you Sonny. All very good points. I was actually worried the husky was drawing too much attention. I will play with your suggestions tonight and post the results later.

I agree with Sonny. Another thing that I would add is that the husky face is a little off centered to the left. Maybe lower the opacity and add a cutout of the coach there in that space?

Or what you could do to de-emphasize the husky a bit is place his face in the lower-right corner instead of the upper-left. We see the husky first because we are taught to read from the upper-left to right. So that is already a natural trend to go to that spot. Pretty cool though! I may try that with a championship game that I just shot yesterday!

I am not sure if the orange in your text is off color, or if the color balance on your shots is off, but the two do not match. The text is a much more vibrant orange/red than the uniforms and the lane paint in the photos that you used.

Other than that -- the suggestions that you have received seem to be decent ones

OK Thanks for all of the suggestions guys! I have played with it a little and here are the results. Jason I just saw your suggestion about moving the husky but I had already done these edits so I will try that later.

Kent I wasn't sure what to do with the orange, the uniforms are burnt orange, the gym/school colors are orange orange and the color temp of the gym is ~3200K- 4800K LOL. What do you think would look better? maybe darken it a bit to split the difference between the school color and uni color?

I like the space and less cluttered field of #2 of the redos, and the B&W makes it a lot less chaotic. However, I think the crop of the Husky is a tad too close, and you can't tell it is a husky - it could just as easily be a demonic wolf. The crop of #1 is still distinctive enough to look like a husky, so maybe a little tweak with that?

Overall, I think these are much improved!
