Youth Baseball - What a weekend! - 04-23-2007, 09:32 PM

My son played in a tournament over the weekend. Below are some of the shots that I came away with. I've been practicing my technique for photgraphing batters in the hopes of catching that Holy Grail of Baseball shots - bat on ball.

As you can see below, I'm getting better. C&C encouraged and welcomed.

Below are a couple that I got of some of the fielders. The kid in the shot below missed making a spectacular nab by just a couple of inches.

I just like the look of intensity on this kid's face. He's one of those players that you can stick him on the field and he'll be an All-Star no matter where he plays.

Looks like you are accomplishing your goal. I'm not sure why the BOB shots are the holy grail shots, as in my four-plus years of shooting and selling I have rarely if ever sold a BOB shot. But it looks as though your timing is pretty good! Hope at least one of those BOB shots was your son :)

Tell those kids to get their head down on the ball! As a 13 year baseball player and hitting coach now, I gotta pick apart the little things. Those shots look great, especially the last fielding one.

Trust me, my son's coach asks me for prints ALL the time just so he can show the players what they're doing wrong.

I've only managed to get BoB 5 times in my life, the 3 above being the most recent. The first 2 I got sold very quickly. It's still too early to tell about the ones above since the images have only been posted for about 1½ days. I guarantee that the first one above will not sell. That's my son.

I've heard other sports photogs refer to BoB as the "Holy Grail of Baseball shots" and I always assumed that it's because it's so hard to capture. I strive for capturing this moment because, A) I think it looks cool, and B) It forces me to practice my timing. One of my goals is to make the time between when my brain says "push the button" to when my finger actually does it as small as possible. This is great practice for that.

Hey Wes. Great shots! I want to go out and take some shots of the league out here in Plano. I know one of these days I will do it. It's just I umpire for the league to much to have enough time to go do it. haha. What league in the DFW area does your son play for?

Colin:
Our coach often asks me to print the images of the kids at bat so that he can show them what they're doing wrong.

Shaun:
My son plays in the Mansfield Youth Baseball Associtation. At least, that's the league that he's in. We do a ton of tournaments and just use the league games as practice. All of the images in this thread were taken during the April Duel in Hurst.

Shaun - Plano PSA softball starts this weekend in Plano at High Point. It's the field on the corner of Spring Creek & Alma. We have our game bright and early at 8am! I have a starting pitcher in the family so you can bet I'll have my camera ready to go. This is her first year to do kid pitch and who would've known she would be such a great pitcher herself! I've got the batteries all charged and ready!!!!!!
