High School Soccer - 01-22-2005, 09:29 AM

These are from last night's Pearland High School varsity soccer game.

Thanks to some advice from Jim Victory these are better than some previous night pictures I've taken but I'm far from satisfied. These were shot at ISO 800 which produced a shutter speed far too slow. In another post, anorcross has demontrated that the DigReb's ISO 1600 is absolutely usable. I'll try that out at the game this coming Wednesday. Finally, I shot half the game in jpeg and half in RAW. I've generally stayed away from RAW but no more. I may use jpeg in the future for day games but from now on at night, its RAW all the way for me.

Thanks for your help and I hope to post better pictures later this week.

Greg

(P.S. Tell me what you think, Jim, and be honest...I can take it.)

Greg,

You have done a good job of composing the action and finding the interesting shot. You have to find a way to get your shutter speeds up so you can freeze the action.

I shoot almost all of my night games at 1600 and sometimes I'll bump it to 3200. If you expose your histogram to right as far as you can without blowing out the highlights you can reduce the noise dramatcially at these high ISO shots.

The more shots you take the better you will get. When you can start anticipating the action you will be getting those winner shots by the truck load. Keep shooting as much as possible. After all the best way to learn with digital is by adjusting for your mistakes.
