5DMkII does sports: Part 2 - 12-11-2008, 01:42 AM

Here is one from tonight. No Noise Reduction or Sharpening. A very slight tweak to contrast was all that was done.

Someone on another forum suggested that distance from subject was influencing the current "happy with new 5DmkII AF" when shooting sports from a distance (ie, far away and zoomed in makes AF distance of travel very small). So I took it to task to test that theory and shot at ice level with a 85F1.8. (perfect btw for shooting through the camera holes.. 5D no grip and small 85 fits perfect).

I am pretty happy with it. I only shot 1 period down on the ice with the 5DMkII, but I wanted to give it a good test... My keeper rate was every bit as good as my 1DMkIII. HOWEVER, 3FPS is not optimal/desirable for hockey...but it can be done. I just did this to give others something to look at.

Normally, I wouldn't shoot at this ISO for hockey, but thought I'd give it a go. I included a slightly cropped image and a 100% crop from the original frame for reference.

There is a tad bit of noise... but I had everything including the Chroma NR turned down to 0. I would normally put a tad of NR and sharpening, but left this without PP.

BTW: The Auto WB on the new 5D is great. So much better...

5DMkII, 85F1.8, F4@1/800, ISO 2000, AWB.

Nice Andrew, thanks for posting these. What's interesting about this is the fact you were able to shoot at f/4 by bumping up the ISO to 2000. Makes the 300 f/4 look really nice to shoot hockey with. That 400 of mine was tight last night and makes me wish I could have afforded to keep the 300 too.
WB is nearly perfect, what was the color temp?

The noise at ISO 2000 is very negligible and I bet nonexistent at decent print size.

Thanks for sharing.

The reality is... I normally import my raw images in with a tad of chroma NR anyway. What you see in these images cleans up nearly 100% with normal LR or ACR defaults. I was just trying to go as plain jane as possible for testing purposes.

I am really happy with it so far.

Take care!
