Front Page of Weekly Newspaper - 06-09-2009, 01:01 AM

The following shot should be running on the front page of the local weekly newspaper (The Slatonite) this week. Not the greatest shot that I took, but this will run as a 1.8x10.5 inch shot and be above the fold, so it will prominently display, and as Jim (the editor - and also friend) said "If I don't completely brainfart, it'll have your credit on it as well!"...

The greatest compliment that he gave me yesterday when I went to see him was not the fact that he is running the shot on the front page, but the fact that when he saw me out there at the airshow on Saturday with my camera, in his words "I didn't worry about shooting, cause I knew you would get some good stuff and I could worry about other stuff..."

He may have not meant it as a compliment, but I sure took it as one.

That's cool! As a former weekly newspaper editor, I was always glad I had some good freelancers to back me up when I ran out of time to go shoot something.

Just a question: was the propeller not spinning when you took the pic, or was your shutter speed too high to depict the motion?

Shutter speed way too high. Really bright out and was using a really long lens handheld. (600 mm x 1.6 =960 mm equiv so I couldn't find a ****ter speed that let me get blur free images from hand shake but allow the prop to blur so I opted mainly for very fast shutter

No need to back off of a valid crit-- it bothered the crap outta me -- I tried shootin on a monopod and slowin down to 1/250. but it still didn't really blur the props, and I was missing a whole lot of shots due to motion blur, and to top it off, I couldn't swing skyward at all without handholding both the lens and the monopod in the air.

There was one really cool plane there -- a jet powered glider... No prop to blur on that thing so I got some cool shots. I'll post them when I get through a few
