My 7D and my new 300mm with a 1.4x TC. In some cases I was too close when they were on the runway but I wanted the reach while the planes were in the sky. Tracking them took some getting used to and the Viper was unbelievable. One maneuver it did was coming in from the right at 300 feet and going vertical 3 miles up. Tracking it was a real chore with that big lens. (My son was shooting with my 5D.)

I think that last shot will make a great black and white. Makes me want to put on headphones and reach my hand up to my throat and say "bandits, 12 o'clock high."

Dennis, your 4th shot was better than mine and mine isn't a keeper, but our shutters were going at almost the exact same moment.

I was there only Sunday and I was too late to enjoy the static display. Next year I'm going earlier and/or multiple days. I may also put my 100-400 on one camera, and my 300 on another. I'm not sure how fast I could switch cameras, but I'd get more keepers overall, I think.
It was a lot of fun and I hope to get to sorting through those shots in the next couple of days.
Thanks for the feedback.

Andy and Dennis, great shots. My favorites, Andy's last shot and Dennis' first shot. Had planned on going this year but, such is life. Should be home for it next year though (I hope any way).
Note of interest, last year these guys were flying right over my house.

I really like the B&W treatments even though color is usually my preference. The B&W lends well to the subjects.

Thanks for the feedback. | If you practice you'll find that switching cameras isn't so bad. I shoot with two cameras; one with a 500+1.6x TC and the other with an 80-400. I've gotten so that I can shoot the start of a pass with the 500, switch to the 80-400 and switch back for the end of the pass. The more you do it, the easier it gets.
It is a lot easier with the long lenses like the 500 that have a rubber ring on the hood so that you can just set the camera down on the hood. Where I can, I use a camera case to set the other camera onto.
