Wings Over Houston Panos (more images posted) - 10-24-2010, 08:48 PM

This year I decided not to shoot thousands of pictures of high speed fly-bys. Instead I went to shoot a lot of panoramas of the static displays. I'm just starting to work on them (stitch them) but probably have about 50 keepers. The cool thing is that when stitch together 18 meg images, you get some really large final images! Here are few of the first ones off the line.

Comments and suggestions welcome!
Mike

Great shots Mike. Very cool idea. I didn't take a wide angle with me but this would have worked. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks Tim. I used my 10-22mm on a 7D body for these. While it often possible to back off a little and get a single shot with a wide angle, a multi-shot panorama can create some unique angles. You also end up with images with very high reslolutions. Most of these were between 4 and 7 shots and ended with images in the 3500 X 10000 pixel range.

As a side note, you need to be understand your panorama program's capabilities and requirements to make these work out. I have three program that I use for this: PS CS4, Stitcher Unlimited, and i2k Quickage. For handheld shots like these, i2k Quickage does the best job of blending and ghost elimination for me. The drawback is you may have to do some distortion cleanup in PS. If I were set up on a tripod wth my pano head, I would probably have used Stitcher.

Mario and Dave, thanks for the comments. Here are a couple of more. With a panorama you can get shots like the bottom of the B-52 wing (not that there is a big demand for that!)
