Looks like an interesting place to check out. Incredible how many planes they can put in a hangar.

I haven't been down there since Ike. Very cool place though.

Thanks folks for the comments. They have done a great job putting this place back together after the storm. The lady at the front dask said they had 8-9 feet of water and roof damage. I do recommend you go. We were there during the week and it was almost empty of people.

Highly recommend it. Took my Dad a few months before he passed away. The Alzheimer’s was really ravaging him by then, by that afternoon he didn’t remember going at all. But while he was there he gave a grand tour and lesson on almost every plane there. He spotted the one that had been converted from a Navy version to AF version (or maybe it was the other way around…?). He remembered seeing ‘that one’ land at Ford Island, ‘that one’ when he was in San Diego. He knew the names and descriptions and use of each one there. He described the interior of his plane (SBD Dauntless) to the last rivet. Others gathered around and listened, I was off to the side totally teary-eyed. I managed to get a few shots of him remembering what he had left to remember.

A few months later Ike took much of the memories and a fast moving infection took Dad within weeks of each other. I did read that they managed to get the SBD out and safe. Sorry, I just get emotional.

Great story Ken, sorry to hear of your dad. Vickie and I are going thru the same with her father, it sure comes on quick.
I wished I could have heard the stories you dad told as he described the aircraft.

Went there this weekend. Could not get complete B-17 as a single shot so taking out the iPhone fired up the app Autostitch and shot the place as panoramas. Came out ok I thought.
This time standing in one place I rotated for the sequential shots, this gave some distortion towards the ends of the wings. Nextime I shall walk in a line parallel to the planes taking the series of overlapping shots required.

Love your photos. Takes me back to the old Brown Shoe days of the Air Force.

Did you look up and catch they use Big Ass Fans fans to circulate their hangar air?

They even have an App.
