Space Shuttle Atlantis Pad Tour and Launch Photos - 08-03-2011, 07:14 AM

Critique: NC:

I posted these once but the post never appeared...not sure what happened. Here's attempt #2
------------
I was fortunate enough to go to school with Rex Walheim, one of the astronauts assigned to STS-135 that launched last Friday. Subsequently I received an invite to the launch that included a bus tour to the pad Thursday night (less than 600 yards from the shuttle). It was nothing less than spectacular. The launch itself was unexpected as the weather was so bad, so when it actually went off I found myself quite emotional...Knowing my good friend was on board and knowing it was the last really got me.

Anyway, here's a few and a link to the rest:

Roll maneuver underway

Note the pressure vapours near the top of the solid rocket boosters on the next one

The launch shots were taken with my D90, 300mm f/4, and a TC14E-II. I used a trip until it was to high to capture then released the ball and used it as an expensive monopod.

The night shots were with my newly acquired 70-200mm VR I.

What an opportunity you had, Ross. I have been to a launch before and they are amazing to see and experience. You got some great images - especially the first and last images.

Beautiful shots, love the last one at night.
