Photoshoot with Car and Model - 10-08-2011, 03:27 AM

Critique: CC:

Okay I didn't know where to post this ... so I am posting it in the People forum and in the car section ...

I wanted to get some opinion about how I went about with these from both Car photographers and people photographers.

I haven't done a photoshoot with a car and model ... so this was a good test to see what things I would run into.

I realized I ran into some issue, but what else would you recommend in me working on these. thanks.

Always, room for improvement. :)

By the way, I wrote a story on my photo venture IF YOU CLICKY HERE

Ok I'll take a crack at it.

1- You did something right. You kept the models away from the car in 2/3's of the photos. I like that. So hard to pull off. Most true automobile photogs wont touch it with a 10 foot pole, unless they can't resist getting into a certain magazine or publication, or the client is waving large amounts of cash. :) Well executed.

2- Your light seems very specular. Almost over exposed to the point of parts of their faces are super blown out. Did you shoot them raw? If so, run them through light room and tone them down a little. (maybe my super bright led monitor too, correct me if I'm wrong) Anyone else seeing this? It does look quite a bit better on my 2nd monitor.

3- Photo number 2 there's some weird stuff going on with their eyes. Always have your models look at the camera. Make them work for you tell them what you want.

4- Number 1 would have been killer with the image toned down and I would have liked to see the model moved away from the camera.

Like I said earlier Ray, your work is coming along nicely. Keep up the good work buddy!!!!

Thanks alot Dale. That's truly helpful.

Yeah, I need to work on the distance of light and how much of the light hit the cars to illuminate it right. It's going to take some practice for sure. Might as well have fun while doing it.

Hence the models.

As for keeping them away from the car ... yes, I had that look in mind from the beginning. I did not want any of their shadow to touch the car ... plus I wanted to light the car and models separately. A different look ... especially since the models were the same height as the car...it's true. ;p I wanted them to be a bit taller than the car.

Thanks again Dale. Glad you are liking the work.

Oh ... and yes. I always shoot in Raw. ;)

I did indeed run these through lightroom as well. I will go back and look at them again.

dale hit it right on here. i agree completely. tone down the flash's power when you're shooting the models, as they are a little blown. are you shooting TTL or manual?

i would also suggest pulling the flash farther away to widen its light path and also diffuse it a bit so it's not so harsh.

good work!

Thanks Theo.

I was working the lights manually. I was using my Sekonic Light meter ... but I guess I did get a bit lazy checking the lights each time I moved the model. lol.
