Drag Race - 05-21-2007, 03:04 PM

I went with Davidtxs Saturday night to North Star drag strip in Denton and shot some pics. Here's one of my favorites from the evening.

Things started around 7:00 PM. For the first 45 minutes or so the light was pretty good but it wasn't too long after that I wished I had the 200mm f1.8L. You don't need long focal lengths (although you can move further up the strip so it doesn't hurt) but you sure as heck need a large aperture.

I've felt that need for a Dungeon Master several times already... pity it's so expensive.

Nice shot John. I always like to see the ripple of rubber on the slicks in back. They do still call them slicks don't they? Were you in the owners area? Looks like it.

Thanks Chris. Yeah, I liked the angle as well as the tire twist on this shot.

Yeah, drag slicks...although David is the real drag race expert, he'll have to field the tough questions.

Naaa, we weren't like you at Lone Star Park - no owners area!

I was on the grass between the grandstands and the track - right up against the track acutally. I positioned myself right behind one of the large wooden posts that holds the armco jut in case.

Roy ONLY special people get into the "owners area" as we all know

great shot john you are going to have to share your pp lol

the tires ripple like that due to a couple o things one is HORSEPOWER lol and the other is about 9 - 10 lbs o air pressure

David, not much in the way of PP on my shot. Just some shadow/highlight - shadow up to about 15, a very light s-curve, and some local contrast enhancement (USM 10,20.0,0).

Your shot is great, even if he's 70 he's still getting it up.

Of course the nighttime racing was much more difficult to shoot. Although it's kind of fun to practice post-processing with.

Nice shots guys! Man, Dinkle has been running that old Fairmont forever, but it still runs pretty darn good! Must be the Pontiac motor in it, lol.

Nice shot David. Maybe I can do that. I'm not 70 yet.

That's a real nice night shot John!

I don't see how y'all can get any closer without getting right underneath the cars.
