Fast RC Boat! - 07-01-2008, 01:22 PM

Too many things wrong with these photos... I grabbed my camera as it sat and ran down to the pond when I heard this cool toy. Shot with my slow, light hungry 55-200 while the sun was most of the way down Oh well, the boat is cool!!

pretty cool shots. The motion blur obtained is very nice. The first one looks almost like it is a full size boat and you are just really far away

Thanks everyone! This thing was waaaay fast and super sketchy. I asked the owner to try to hold a straight line as long as he could so I even had a chance. It really was great panning practice

Those look good considering your challenges. Did you happen to talk to the owner about coming out again with a better lens when he brings it back?

Actually I did. He said he is out there all the time, so I will try to catch him soon. I wasnt real talkative while out there, I forgot to mention that my camera was still on the stroboframe with the GF cloud and everything (full wedding trim) so I felt like an idiot!

That's one thing that bugs me about rocketry: when I'm doing test flights alone, the rocket is way up there by the time I can drop the launch controller and bring the camera up.

The best I can generally manage is a shot or two of tracking smoke and ejection. Recovery phase sometimes makes for one or two interesting shots, but I'm thinking about building a controller with a foot pedal so I can get some liftoff shots.

It's all about mounting a camera TO a rocket (no, you can't borrow one of mine).

I was just in a discussion of the horrible lack of quality in the premade Estes camera rockets; in addition to the leftover 110 rockets (gee, that should be loads of fun - 24 flights of one shot each to use up the film, and then you get to find someone to process it) they offer a couple of pitiful digitals now. The better of the two will do a series of 640x480 shots or a (single) 30 second video at 320x240. Both lack any removable storage, and have only volatile memory. (Gotta suck for the kid with a 3-pack of engines and no laptop to download the video between flights.) Basically, they take a <$10 rocket and added a <$15 camera, then offer it for $130. (The lesser one can be had for $75 but it's even worse.)

A lot of guys have hacked the pen-cams to get better resolution, capacity and frame rate with SD capability, and still manage to get them to fit into a BT-55 tube, thus making a much better camera rocket for about $50-75. I just got in an order of BT-55, so I'll keep looking for some dirt cheap cameras to fiddle with.

Meanwhile, the OP needs to find his own RC boat and a waterproof video camera
