race track equipment restrictions - 09-06-2008, 06:04 AM

Does anyone know if there are any restrictions on camera equipment at the Texas Motorplex during a NHRA event? At the upcoming race I am planning to take my 70-200 2.8 and monopod and would hate to get turned away at the gate.
Thanks

I was thinking of trying to get to the fence on the spectator side near the RV parking, but I don't remember if they let you get to the fence there. I used to go every year, but I haven't been for 3 or 4 years. I also was thinking of going on Friday night, but then remembered that was my anniversary, so I better not push my luck.

I went last year and got some nice shots from up in the stands looking down. Took my D200, have D300 now, with the 70-200 and my monopod and had no problem at all. The monopod with a ball head really helps with panning. Also you can leave the camera on it and put it over your shoulder to keep weight off the neck.

At work now but I'll post some pics in the morning after the F1 race if I have time

I would stay off the fence its just above track level and you will get great shots of the top half of cars lol, Depending on time of day should dictate what side early afternoon spectator side later pit side
Shot from the Handicapped Stand its first row in the stands on the pit sidewith the 600 mmnow these were shot from the stands about half way up by the infamous CaptTom

I'm going again this year and I'm sitting in the stand mid track and will be shooting from high up. I shot last year from the Super Seats and it sucked. I took my 300mm with a monopod and no problem. I was glad I had it as I was able to snap a few shots of John Force's accident (so glad he is doing well this year). Other than those shots I didn't get any reall good shots from where I was sitting. As DavidTX said, don't go to the fence line or you will only get the tops of the cars with the concrete wall.

Probably Saturday and Sunday. It depends on whether I can get the seat location I want. I'll call the ticket office tomorrow. I'm thinking the Ahern or Coca Cola stands will give me a good vantage point.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I forgot about the wall next to the track. I'll check tomorrow to see if I can still get a seat up high.
