Fast "bike" - 12-09-2008, 12:04 PM

I use my old GT mountain bike for errands and riding for fun. I put slick tires on it last year and rode several charity rides leading up to the Hotter N'Hell Hundred and finished the sucker. Not the fastest rig, but really reliable.

Last time we visited my wife's parents at their lake house, I ended up taking it with me to ride around. There's a monster hill on the way that is basically straight down one way and then straight up, with potholes and gravel at the bottom. I rode it several times, but after finding a safer line I let go of the brakes entirely. My bicycle computer isn't 100 percent accurate, but it's usually close. Here's a photo of my bike computer and the maximum speed (in mph) on the second line, recorded on one of those last downhill rides:

YOu could have started out with treaded tires because at the end they would have been slick.......

Reminds me of the two times I had mountain bikes over 45 mph (both with knobbies). The first time was in Telluride (Cannondale CAAD3 hardtail) after riding the gondola up and then the trail down, we hit the road back to town. The second time was in Caprock Canyon State Park on the road back to the car (Klein Mantra Race). Afterwards, both times, I thought to myself "If I would have wrecked it would have been an ambulance ride." Yikes!!

56...coming down Conzelman Rd (north end of the Golden Gate Bridge). Schwinn Moab with carbon fiber rims, slicks, & aero bars. I was too scared to tap the front brake till I got back down around 35.

Now that is traveling!

I'm not a fan of aero bars, though. I want to have a good grip on my regular bar if I'm even just cruising.

I wasn't stupid enough to actually use the aero bars on that road. Too many curves...and about a 400 ft drop off. Aero bars are the greatest gift given to a bike though. After brakes.

Sweet! Anything over 40MPH can get really scary when you're wearing only Lycra (yes I know that's an ugly thought when it comes to me).

During my training for Ironman Florida, I used to ride over and back several of the passes between San Jose and Santa Cruz. On one particular section of Hecker Pass we would regularly reach 60+ MPH. All the while on 650x23mm Grand Prix tires. That was the ONLY time my 235# butt had the advantage over the skinny runt triathletes. Power to the Clydesdale!
