I've always maintained that some bubbles, or the reflection from the surface instantly identifies the image as an underwater image.
Without these elements, the viewer has to figure out why the image looks that way.

Fantastic series. You're getting really good at these! That first one is a big winner, I just WISH you'd gotten her hand in the shot.

Nice processing on most.

Can't wait to see your next series!

Joe

Yeah, it's tricky. Learned a few things on this one - namely you need to have the model weighted so she can sink on a full breath.. and that a second assistant u/w with a scuba tank and a long hose for breaths would def help...

Hi Daylon,

Edit: I just realized this is the model I referred to you from Myspace. Sweet - it worked!

Very good - I love your post processing, very interesting. I guess the model was flailing around a lot? It doesn't help that you wrapped her up in silk, lol. Well she didn't drown...did she? :-)

The lighting is a lot better than your first shoot.

Weighting the model - interesting, how would you do that?

Cheers
James

Small world; I shot with this model this afternoon. Her Mom mentioned that she worked with a photographer in scuba equipment. I'm embarrassed to mention what I had for u/w gear for this, my first u/w photo shoot.

Oh, was it you? Thanks a ton James.. learned a lot from this shoot.

I think putting a small scuba weight belt with about 1-3 pounds would help a bit for these kinds of shoot. The models could wear it under their clothes, and that would allow them to take bigger breaths and still be negatively bouyant, which would let them pose for longer amounts of time underwater..

She was flailing a bit to keep "down".. so maybe a little weight would address a couple of problems..

FWIW, that wasn't a significant problem on our shoot. But, she mentioned that you used sort of a small, black backdrop that confined her space considerably. As you may see from my photos, we did not, so she was more free to move around. There was one shot at the end of her sitting in a chair at the bottom of the pool that she said she might need a weight, but I think she simply exhaled to stay down for the few seconds I needed. I did put a rock in the chair to hold it down.

I was the one who needed the weight. I don't have any scuba equipment and I'm not scuba certified. I started the shoot trying to stay underwater while holding my breath, then letting out enough air to stay under, but I finally ended up holding a large rock over my head with one arm while I shot with the other hand. I was able to stay underwater for one or two minutes at a time, which was about three times as long as my model could stay underwater. I usually just sat there underwater, holding my breath and a large rock over my head, as I waited for her to dive back under water.

Well, I used an emperor king-size black sheet that stretched from the top to the bottom of the 8 foot pool and is approx 8 feet wide.. one would think that would be enough room to play in...

Oh well.. maybe two sheets side by side is the answer...
