EEK! No thank you! I also am a scuba diver. It's never bothered me to dive with sharks, baracuda, you name it, but a moray scares the crap out of me! My very first open water dive when I was 12 years old, I had a huge moray come out of its hole toward me and I've never been able to look at them since.

Not scared of sharks eh... Come to Monterey during sea lion pup season.
Be afraid, be very afraid!

The water is too darn cold in California. Let the whites have it. I prefer Little Cayman!

Too bad my D70 isn't water proof.

Cheers,

Okay, let me clarify. I'm not afraid of nurse sharks or reef sharks. I don't do great whites. We were hoping to see a hammerhead from a distance this past fall in French Polynesia, but no such luck.

I keep looking into getting a housing for my 300D, but DH and I have decided it would be better just to buy an underwater camera next time we go diving. Have you priced the housings?!?!

I've never had a close encounter with one, but they scare me just because I think they look SO CREEPY! Ew. Went to the Downtown Aquarium recently and I didn't even want to look at those guys....

The prices are darn near more than the body/lens combo. At least in the D70 camp. And no more Nikonos either. Why? To save me more money. Ha ha. I'll just spend it on more lights, glass, bodies, etc...

I have to admit that I never saw a great white when diving in Montery. I'm sure they were there, I just never saw them. I have however dove with a 8' hammerhead off San Salvador Island in the Bahamas. My wife and I were on our honeymoon on a wall at 110' when this brute just swam by us about 5 meters away. Of course he came up from behind, sneaky bugger. Dove with Makos and Blues off the San Diego coast, but that was in a cage. At least once you got from the boat to the cage...

Almost as much fun as jumping out of a plane at 18,000 feet! (serious adrenaline junkie, I am).

Can't wait to get wet again!

Wendy,

Given your comment about morays, I thought I'd share a few old pics (haven't been diving in 3 years and am very, very anxious for a trip) that I've taken in the past. All were shot with a Nikonos V and 15mm UW-Nikkor lens which I anticipate selling off in favor of using the sale to fund the cost of a housing for my Nikon D70. Ikelite housings are in the neighborhood of $1800 or so I believe, but I'd really like to get a nice aluminum housing, and that will shoot the price closer to $3000 if not more, by the time you buy a port. Then there's also the flash equipment needed and I don't expect I'll keep my SB-102 for Digital use. It would be very pricey to do so but I've been pondering getting a housing for my SB-800 flash, and perhaps even buying another to also house. Doing so would probably mean I'd have to go with Subal housing which would easily drive me into $4000+ for everything. By the time I could afford such a housing, I dare wonder if I'll have already moved from the D70 to a higher-res camera of the 8-10 Mpx range. I sure hate to lose the sweet 15mm UW-Nikkor, but I really welcome the versatility of pure digital for u/w photography and having two sets of equipment is just too much for a hobbyist to hold onto.

Regards,

Daryl

For that last image, I touched a moray for the first time ever...something I'd not have attempted during the day, but on this night shoot I figured I could pretty safely stroke the back end of the moray to motivate it out more into the open on this head of coral where I grabbed the shot. Fingers still intact. :)
