I think you'll be OK, they have a thin candy shell. I'm surprised you didn't know that.

You seriously swim with sharks? That's life on the edge! Cool photos.

Enjoyed viewing the photos. The first two almost look like paintings. Something different for sure. Thanks for sharing.

James,

I've been complaining about how "hard" it is to get close to an Egret or a Heron to take a decent photo. After seeing your beautiful pictures and what you went through to get them, I think I'll just shut up.

Wonderful photos. Thanks for posting them. :D

Man that is awesome! I am green with envy.

I can't believe you got that close to Tigers. Except for the Bull shark, they are the most likely to attack a human. Nice sized animals. The perfect machine. Eat, swim, make baby sharks...

My dream is to go to South Africa and do a cage dive with Great Whites. I've been that close to Hammerheads off San Salvador Island (Bahamas). My wife and I got checked out by an eight footer at about 100' down on a wall. I did a cage dive with Blues and Makos off the San Diego coast a few years ago, but those are nothing compared to the big boys.

What island and dive group did you go with? I have got to get back in the water and soon! Next to skydiving and motorcycle racing, nothing gives me the shot in the main vein like diving with sharks!!!!!!!

Very Nice work!

The last sharks I dove with were in 1974 off the coast of Yucatan. Prior to that I did dive with a Tiger shark off the coast of Viet Nam in 1970 with some Navy Seals as a guide.

It was a 12 footer with a nasty disposition

Hi folks,

Thanks for the feedback. I had hoped that some new and different types of nature photography would be appreciated here. I'll post more often.

Scott: Thanks. These were taken on the Grand Bahama bank at a spot called Tiger Beach discovered by Jim Abernathy of JASA. We dove with NO cage and Jim and his crew gave us an extensive briefing about how to interact with the sharks. Basically the sharks are interested in fish and only investigate the divers - which is exactly what we want! :-) I've always wanted to do a trip out of San Diego (my home town) with San Diego Shark Diving - is that who you used? I checked out your site and you have some great glamour work. Your photo of Erin is awesome!

Like bburton said, one of the most difficult things about getting underwater photographs is getting close to the animals. Because of the limitations of underwater lighting, it's hard to get a decent shot if the subject is over 3 feet away:

This tiger shark is actually bumping my camera! Luckily she didn't think it tasted good (they sorta taste w/ their noses).

Cheers
James

Excellent information. My wife has been bugging me to take a trip to Atlantis. Maybe I can make a side trip :)

The dive I did was with San Diego Shark Diving. We went out to the Coronado escarpment and chummed for about two hours. I rented a video camera and housing for the trip. We had really great visibility and at one point had 5 blues and 2 makos around the cage. Paul was in the water in the chain mail suit and I have two camera bumps on my video. Man those blues are fast. One second they on one side of the cage, then poof they were somewhere else.

Thanks for the comments on my photos. Erin is a really great model. Too bad she lives in VA. She might want to do a workshop here in Dallas again. If she does, I'll announce it here for others to see.

Keep posting the underwater stuff. I've never done U/W photography, but love to dive. Been all over the coast of CA and the Caribbean. Favorite spot is the bloody bay wall on little Cayman. Eagle and Manta rays rock!

Great shots James, please keep posting. Like Scott, I love diving but have never done any serious underwater photography. I have a point and shoot minolta, but the pictures ar not the greatest. I would love to get a housing for my D70, but the prices are too high for the little time that I spend diving at home in Puerto Rico when I have a chance to go.
