Blue Moon’s Spiegel Grove Ascent - 07-10-2007, 10:10 PM

When the opportunity arises, I’d just as soon get an up close view of what lies beneath. This is an ascent image I shot this past spring while diving on the USS Spiegel Grove that is resting in 134 of water off Key Largo.

In 1966-68 I served aboard the USS Fort Snelling, now in a similar resting place somewhere in the Atlantic. We frequently worked with Speigel Grove in various fleet exercises. Fort Snelling's hull number was LSD-30; I don't remember Spiegel Grove's for certain, but it may have been LSD-28. You've produced a little nostalgia for me this morning!

Thanks for the kudos everyone. Regarding your question, 20 foot waves and the below rip tide from Hurricane Dennis in 2005 miraculously righted Spiegel Grove. She was initially closed until Monroe County officials deemed her stable.
