Canon G10 underwater - 03-10-2009, 11:27 AM

I have a quick question. I've got a Canon G10 and am about to buy the underwater housing for it. The question is, is there anything else I need to get to go along with that? Silicone grease, desiccant, additional weights?

I'm only planning on using it snorkeling and in swimming pools, no deep diving, but I've never used any of these housings before. Any advice would be very helpful.

heh - yes. That one I've had for a while (and they are quite happy with the idea of it being used underwater)

Naw, Gordon, you should be good to go with the case. Never a bad idea to add some dessicant but shouldn't be required. We've had our Olympus down to about 40'-50' with no problem.

the digicams with a screen always on do seem to get foggy on occasion. some dessicant packs would be a wise idea. the housing should come with some silicon grease for the o-ring if youre buying it new (if not, just go to your local dive shop and get some 100% silicon). just remember, silicon is not a sealant, it is just to lubricate the o-ring ( a tiny tiny dab will do you). enjoy it!

Get a stretchy lanyrad so you can attach it to yourself, lest it get washed away. Trust me, I have first-hand experience with losing equiment in choppy/current water :(

One of the photographers on our cruise last week was using one. It worked great both in the water and out. He just left it on the whole time. He got some great shots of dolphins running with our catamaran. He didn't have to worry about spray like everyone else.

It worked well, thanks for the advice. Main difficultly was lack of any diving gear and experience of working underwater. Got several shots that I was happy with on the first outing. Going to try again in the next week or so too.

Which housing did you get Gordon? I was going to get the canon one for my G10, but forgot and ran out of time..... I guess I'll have to go back to Virgin Gorda again someday..... this is the one I was thinking:
