I use MPEG Streamclip to pre-render .MOV files to the codec of my choice before putting them into the NLVE.

There are lots of MPEG Streamclip tutorials out there for Avid codecs, Apple ProRes, etc. It's one extra step in the workflow, but it saves you a lot of the frustration of watching jerky video.
