What are you using for Video Editing? - 07-19-2011, 11:00 AM

Wanted to start a more current thread to find out what you guys are using for video editing.
Currently, I am using Vegas for editing AVCHD footage, and am falling out of love with Vegas.
The post edit, rendered file sizes are way bigger than they need to be.

I recently had one job that in Vegas had to span 2 DVDs.
I popped it into a friends editing machine and spit it back out through Premier CS4 and it fit into a single DVD. No mods, no tweaks on compression ratios, etc.

Just curious to see what you are using now (since the last thread was almost a year old).

Would also love to know what you like and dont like about it.

Just doing some legwork before shelling out some coin.

Thansk

I am at the moment a Final Cut Studio Editor v7. I use to work on Media 100, Media 844x and Avid Media Composer.

What I like about FCS7:
- Easy to use
- Great integration of all of the different codecs and regions (Pal / NTSC).
- Output to DVD is real simple both for Standard DVD and BluRay.
- Effects are easy to apply and manipulate
- Almost same layout as Avid
- Easy to follow File Layout System
- Multi-Cam style editing
- Can bring in Photoshop Layers Intact (minus effects)
- Codecs for Apple ProRes / AVCHD / XDCAM / HDCAM pre-built.
- Tons of support by third party units and plug-ins

What I don't like about FCP7:
- It hick-ups quite often when working with large files of HD or even Uncompressed 8-bit BetaSP
- Render File locations get jumbled up alot
- Hard to network between computers with out having to buy a network setup from Apple (But can be done)
- Apple support itself for this software stinks. Better support from third party help

I am also disappointed they are moving to an iMovie feel for the new FCP-X.

On to Avid:
- Easy to use
- Quick Keys alot easier to map on keyboard
- 3 point editing much stronger
- keeping audio and video connected much better than FCP
- A full integrated system with a fairly good graphics set up (Except against After Effects)and DVD authoring software (I find more superior that FCP and Adobe)
- Has been industry standard for years
- If doing audio, utilizes all of the great Mackie components
- Lot of Third Party support both hardware and software

What I don't like about Avid:
- Cost, Oh man is it expensive.
- When something goes, oh something goes wrong. And can lock up the whole computer
- If you move the Files around, it takes a moment to re-locate them.

Adobe CS5.5 Production Premium. Premier Pro is pretty easy and efficient to use. After Effects is taking some getting used to.

+1

I grew up learning Premiere and tried FinalCut. I couldn't make the switch, so I stuck it out when I switched to a Mac. I use AE to handle special effects. Also use it stabilize a video clips.

I used to use Avid Xpress, but I am now a CS5 user. After Effects is my killer app; I know it fairly well, and it meshes with the rest of the Adobe family very smoothly.

After Kludging around with FCE I'm really eyeballing this. I came across this video on Vimeo and I really liked what I saw

The video is over 50 minutes long and it covers a lot

Thanks for posting that. I'll look at it later today.., much later today. LOL

Okay, I had a chance to watch the video and can say that there were a number of things demonstrated that I haven't seen in other "training" videos. Gives a nice perspective on workflow adjustments.

Very interesting ... since I am disappointed with what Apple has done with the latest upgrade to the Pro Series ... this is interesting.

I do have the Adobe Production Suite ... But haven't had a chance to fully dive into Premiere.

Detailed Adobe Premiere & Dynamic Linking Workflow on Vimeo
Good video. I've been using Adobe Premier and After Effects for years. Bought CS5 last year and this video taught me a few new things.

The only problem with using Dynamic Linking are your rendering times. At least in CS5 it's much slower, but my work around is to replace the "linked objects" with the linked objects on the final product. It was never a deal breaker for me.

I need to find a "cheaper" version than what Adobe has on their site. I found it for a lot less on Adorama and Amazon but I'm not 100% sure that it's apples to apples

I'm not sure about the pricing, but they might be selling educational licenses.

Adorama's pricing was not stated as educational. Amazon's was better by about $300 but theirs is an educational license and "proof" must be given before you can get a s/n
