Which Camcorder Should I Get? - 07-02-2010, 03:55 PM

Hi everyone,

I am looking to add an HD camcorder to my arsenal. I've seen some nice JVC and Sony listed under $3k for a good intermediate camcorder. I've also set my budget to $3k or lower. What would you suggest I consider or read more about for my first camcorder? My partner uses JVC only but I would like to get more opinions.

Thanx!!

I don't think there's a specific thing I would we shooting. We are currently doing a lot of documentaries and a few pilot shows for a small local television station right now.
What would you suggest?

Luis
Yes, I'm starting to really like my 7D since I've been using it more often. There's a lot of times though, I don't have the versatility of having a traditional camcorder so I want to a least have one as an option. I am googling the HMC right now as we speak.
thanx!!

Not sure about the current prices but I like the JVC HD110U, although I think there's a newer one out already. That paired with a hard disk unit was my fave for sit down interviews... the viewfinders are a bit more fragile than I'd like though. If it were me I'd stick to the 7D and maybe build up accessories around it since you've got the glass and whatnot.

(Call me a coot, but a Sony D600 is a dream for me.)

Panasonic GH1 with the new hacked firmware. I see them going for 1000 bucks now when on sale.

If you want HDV ... There is the Sony FX1, Z1, A1U and 1000U

Or the JVC 110 or 100U

Or the Panasonic 100B

There are so many options ... that I have fell into the rental side of HD. Because video HD cameras change as often as Bodies for SLRs.

For your cost and budget, you need to also consider the audio, cables and what not.
