Question Video Editing / Titling software - 07-29-2010, 06:02 PM

So... I have watched a lot of videos and there seem to be good editing software like Sony Vegas, Final Cut Pro, and Adobe Premiere.

However, on the "nice" videos I see, there is a huge difference in the "titling". The cheesy software I have does titles... but they really suck. What do the "pros" use? And what can "non-pros" use to get something decent... that doesn't look cheesy?

TIA,

- Wil

Final Cut Pro is an industry standard now but some titles are done in After Effects. Film titles are done now with proprietary software. Industrial Light and Sound (Lucas Films)has it own software.

Anyone have any clue what software was used to make this video? Are all the "high end" NLE programs able to do this?

It is something that can be done in the High End NLE software, Premiere, Final Cut, Avid, Vegas ... It's just alot of work.

You can create layered composition in Photoshop than bring them in those programs and move them.

IT IS A WHOLE LOT EASIER IN AFTER EFFECTS! I use AE CS3 just about everyday, and the ability to use Illustrator or Photoshop layers is amazing in that program and you have a whole lot more control for those effects.

So for this video you posted, I can say that it is probably 100% AE.

But it can be done in any NLE program with some layer help. Just harder.

+1 for AE CS3.
I found some titling and titling effects demos on YouTube for Vegas and have done a few that way, but AE is the way to go for that.

Where you really run into more pain is when you have titling and effects layers with transition effects and all that can go on in there as well within key frames.

It can be intense, but worth it in the end.

Now then, is there a tool that (in the simpler photo mode brain...) add text and run an action?... in an attemp to automate some of the pain... Yeah, but you wont get anything near what you are envisioning.

For what software? You mean like the Actions Panel of Photoshop where you can record some steps and then have it as an automated step for later?

In AE, when I create a graphic, I usually just create Nested files in there, so in the future I just have to replace the footage within the nested files to keep the same effects and filters intact.

Dale,

I purchased Photodex proshow producer last year for my wife. It's just not as powerful as I would like... I think. I've used it a bit and it's just quirky... to me.

I have Final Cut Studio at work and do my titles in Motion... it comes with the suite.

I think it does a great job, but I'm not impressed with its masking capabilities.

edit: I'm able to use psd and ai files in it.

ah, ok. I'd stick with AE... all my editor friends that have used both claim there's not much of a difference.

if you happen to have flash, you can get away with animating text in it... but the video export sometimes kinda sucks.

I use After Effects for the motion graphics and use the layering capaiblities. It's easiest. If you want 3D titles, I would consider BorisFX.
