wishful thinking.... - 11-14-2010, 06:43 PM

So in my wishful thinking.. with my new computer I was going to be able to get all my 8 mm videos on a hard drive and be able to edit them and put them on some dvd's. Dreams...

The computer has turned out to be wonderful...but it doesn't like my video camera. It is old...but it still works great for me. It is a Sony DCR-HC1000. I was able to download a short video on my laptop a couple months ago. (yeah wish I good remember exactly what I did, and which cord I used). So I tried to replicate the process. I could get the laptop to read the SD card with photos on it from the camcorder, but it would not recognize the camcorder or any videos. Also the screen on the camcorder says USB must be disconnected before you change the settings.

The new computer which has professional window 7, will not recognize anything.

Any suggestions??

Ah, the disagreements between new and old technology. I'll be watching this thread.

oK...I got the new computer to see the photos. John I did call Rich. I thought I used a svideo cord on the laptop...we thought that was the problem. I'm not convinced of that now.

I am wondering even more if it is a setting on the the camcorder. Here is the exact thing it says on the camcorder screen "USB mode disconnect the usb cable before changing the setting"....guess I will have to get serious and get the dang manual out. bummer

I have an old Canon DV camcorder and it has to use firewire to transfer the video. Maybe try that?

I used to use an HC1000 for a remote / crash cam (it is a 3-chip after all) and occasionally a tape deck when the studio deck crapped out... IIRC it had firewire (what Sony called iLink), which we could connect via Firewire to a computer or laptop in order to import footage. Never used USB.

But (and this is all off of shaky old memory) - some of Sony's Digital 8 (Hi-8 sized but a digi format) were able to connect via USB but it was a crap resolution at best.

see..I have to be doing something wrong. I used a cord (lord knows I have enough of them) to download part of a video on the laptop. I can't get the laptop to recognize the video at all now. Same with the new desktop. So I hate to go buy anything new...Rich suggested this.."Ion Video-2-PC Digital Video Converter " but I'm thinking it is something I'm doing. It is frustrating the crap out of me!!!!

I have the firewire, 6 pin to 4 pin, I have a usb, I have a cord that goes from the a/v plug on the camcorder to the svideo plug on the laptop...nothing works.

I just read in another thread that Windows 7 doesn't play well with firewire. That maybe the problem here. Because I'm pretty sure it needs to be firewire to transfer the full res video from the camcorder.

Now a video converter would probably work, but doing it that way you will take a hit on the quality vs keeping it in the DV format.

Hopefully, that will be addressed with the service pack release.

whoopsie!!! that firewire port on the computer...it's just for looks!!! Since windows 7 and firewire don't play well together the firewire port wasn't connected. So I am searching for another alternative. It was also some of my settings. But after we got all the settings correct it still wasn't working...then we figured out the firewire connection issue.
