I am in the market to replace a 6 year old canon video camera, my price range is around 350-450 so that really doesnt put me into the HD market so my real question is has the video quality of the standard def camera's changed much over the last 6 years? Or should I hold out a bit longer and get a HD cam?

I would recommend getting an HD Cam. Their are some used older model HD cams that are great and some of the newer ProSumer market cameras that use Flash memory are great for a real good cost.

Though not in your 450 price range ... Are you looking for a ProSumer camera or more of a consumer one? There are several options in the 450 price range for a consumer one.

What canon camera do you have? Like a GL1/2 or a XL2?

picked up a Sony HDR-cx110, just needed a little consumer camera for the family and my daughters upcoming state and national karate competitions. it had good reviews on amazon and best buy had it on sale so win all the way around.
