Finally a proper Video camera that can compete against the Canon 5D and 7D.

Phililp Bloom has a (somewhat gushy) writeup on it. It seems to be a very interesting camera, and I can't wait to see how the industry reacts to it.

Well, from the reviews ... it seems to be pretty promising.
And since I am jumping back into the market for an ENG Pro camera and stepping away from tapes ... this sounded like a deal for under 5K.
And the Adaptimax adapters aren't too expensive to use my Nikon lenses on this bad boy.
So, I am very interested to see it's forward motion with the industry.
My only concern is it utilizes SD cards as oppose to the P2 cards or even CF cards.

/tukaniray, I just checked, and Zacuto included the AF100 in their Great Camera Shootout 2011. Part two just came out this week, it's on the Zacuto home page. It's eye opening to see how little difference there is in image quality between a hundred thousand dollar rig and a 5D or even a D60. They also include Kodak 35mm film. The first two episodes of the test series are about 30 minutes each, but well worth watching.

^^ Thanks ... I will look into that.
I am glad the quality and control is basically even with the Panasonic and the 5D ... but the big PLUS for the Panasonic are the dedicated Audio XLR plugs. Something that still needs extra equipment for the 5D ... and Of course the rolling shutter issue.

I deal with this two cameras on a daily basis and each has it's own place in the market both cameras are amazing if use properly. I honestly like the quality of the footage better from the 5DMKII since the dynamic range it's way better you can see that on the sample video just look at the footage from the Panny and you can see that it tends to blow out the highlights pretty quick. The panny on the other hand is a beautiful camera to handle very intuitive and the controls are just a big plus we use this camera for corporate and documentary style weddings. We use the 5DMKII, 7D and 60D for a more cinematic style on commercial videos and wedding highlights.
We are getting the new SONY NEXFS100 we believe that this camera is going to have better IQ than the Panny and maybe close to the quality from the 5DMKII footage.
I believe that the HDSLR has a great place in the industry and for the price is just incredible what you can do with them, again if you know what your doing.
To recap I give my vote to the 5DMKII on: image quality, dynamic range, DOF, color and sharpness.
and my vote for the Panny on: ergonomics, higher frame rates and audio capabilities.

^^ You should check out the "Great Camera Shootout" by Zacuto" that Dave was stating.
Here is the Link: CLICK ME FOR LINK TO SHOOTOUT
Though I also think the DSLR look pretty good, but their shootout shows things that are very important to me as a Broadcast videographer and event videographer.
I also, like the full connection of dedicated XLRs. Yes, you can get a separate audio recorder for the DSLRs, but when you have a day in and day out deadline, that's just another hour on top of the hour of editing just to relink the audio.

I hear great things about Plural Eyes, especially if you record audio on your cam just for sync. I really like the new dedicated video recorders with interchangeable lenses, but the $5k for a bare camera with no lens or accessories is a bit steep.

^^ True, but most of video cameras in this class are in this price range.
Then you would spend another 400 on an Adaptimax adapter for your Canon/Nikon lenses. Then you are good to go.
That's the reason why I am looking at them. I really enjoy the feel and weight and control of a dedicated ENG camera as oppose to using a DSLR for video.

^^ I will say that the Zoom H4N is great. I have used that many of times.
Nice video of the Recycle and disposal company.
I am not saying that video from the DSLRs aren't great, but feel and control of a Dedicated ProENG camera is what I like. Having an onboard ND Filter, more at the finger tips control of the Audio, Gain, Shutter and Iris is what I am more concerned about when I do things like live events and shows. The DSLRs are great for documentary style shooting though, I will say. But just want to be eased in my mind that I have the ability of manual precise control than letting something be mainly automatic and trusting the device.

We actually do the exact opposite we use the DSLR's for highlights and commercial work like the recycle and disposal add you liked I used a 60D and a glidecam system because of the nature of the production, we need it short and quick shots mostly in motion except for a couple of tripod shots to be able to interpret our customer vision again one simple tool for a simple job.
I am more concern about image quality than anything else and I honestly still have not seen any other footage better than 5DMKII for the price range (3200-4000 USD) maybe the new Sony NEX FS100U can get us closer but the AG-AF100 does not come even close.
Don't get me wrong the AG AF100 is a great camera but Image quality compare to DSLR is not there yet.

Interesting. I have seen opposite, but I can see different environments of use for different people.
I am actually interested in checking out Sony's Interchangeable Camera the NEX-FS100.
Being that at the studio I work at, we have been using the EXCAM EX1 and Sony HDV Z7u, I have been pretty confident in Sony's chips.

Isn't it a 4/3 camera? The Canon is a full frame. I would think the sensor is bigger hence good for low light. Just some thoughts. Plus with the Canon isn't it 3k less? I could buy 2 good L lenses for that. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
