Lens, stabilizer, and software motion control - 08-19-2011, 04:51 PM

Many new lenses come with built in image stabilization. Many shooters also use Glidecam or Merlin type stabilizers. Now Premiere Pro has motion correction built in as well. Can anyone tell me if these systems work well together? Can you turn on lens stabilization while using a Glidecam? Do they work together, or at cross purposes? Any experience with Adobe's software motion correction? I can't recall if it's in Premiere Pro or After Effects.
Thanks!

IS and a glidecam or merlin do different things. If you want the steady-cam look, in-lens IS will not provide that look for you. It will help tremendously in cleaning up normal camera shake in video, though. I know a lot of videographers that use the 24-105L IS extensively, but I would bet most use fast, light primes.

I was wondering if the two systems worked together, or would fight each other.. i.e., are you better off turning off IS on the lens when using a Merlin stabilizer?

The software motion correction you are referring to is called "warp stabilizer" and is part of Adobe After Effects.

Unless you are using a tripod there is no reason to turn IS off.

I had heard about turning IS off for a tripod, that's why I was wondering it a Merlin or Glidecam might cause problems.

Between IS, stabilizers, and warp stabilizer, there's no longer any excuse for shaky video.
Have you seen what you can do with the Sony DSC-HX9V? I watched a clip of a guy just walking around with the camera, and it looked like he was using a Merlin. Amazing video for $350.
