Video Camera for Hunting Documentary? - 09-03-2011, 06:43 AM

I have a coworker that wants to record his hunts in 1080i. He isn't a tech buff. He knows I'm into cameras so he asked my opinion on what video camera would be best. He went online and found a "video hunting package" for $2500 that included tripod and a Sony HDR FX-7. I was reading the specs and it seems like a nice video camera.

Are there any recommendations for other cameras for this specific purpose?

I like it. It's durable as well. Veery capable and affordable solution for all run and gun occasions. He can find em for half that price on ebay though. No need for a tripod when shooting outdoor programming. It'll just slow him down.

What sort of filming is he trying to do? I'd suggest buying a handful of GoPros and setting them up in various locations - hides, helmet cams, even rail cams if his weapon(s) are so equipped.

I did a promo video for a tactical unit a couple of years ago and used a lower resolution helmet-cam mounted to the Picatinny rail of the breaching man's M4 (both forwards and backwards) - it was a nice POV to mix up all the high angles I was getting in the shoothouse.
