Blu-Ray disks are $10-$30 a piece. I think I will get the DVD recorder then upgrade later. I make a lot of mistakes and learning is expensive with Blu-Ray.

Just realize that you're not seeing the full quality with DVD. Your videos originate at 1080p and your DVD player is showing you 480p. If you're only going to use DVD's then you might as well lower the quality of your videos.

Video output via HDMI to the TV is awesome, just as good as bluray.

Cool.. Does it look like that while shooting video as well? I have been thinking about getting an HDMI capable LCD (portable hopefully) to use as a field monitor. Would love to use it for focusing and such when out shooting. I just cannot do an effective job while contorted trying to follow focus and view the 3in fixed position LCD on board.

Yes, the LCD screen on the new 5D is amazing. Blows away the old 5D!

NO.. I mean connecting the 5DmKII to a separate LCD through HDMI while shooting.

I agree that the LCD on the camera is nice.. but it is FAR FAR from optimal for shooting video and manually focusing.

I just tried it for you on my 1080I HD LCD and it seems to work fine and very clear. It is 42" so I think a smaller screen would be much better.

Thanks! Coolness. Just waiting on Monoprice to get some 6ft cables back in stock...
Now I gotta figure out a portable LCD solution with HDMI. Too bad I can't find any portable DVD players with HDMI input...Not guessing that is all that useful for the normal person. haha

Now you see my dilemma. I want a DVD Recorder but want to use my HDMI output on the camera. The DVD recorders are HDMI output but not input. I don't always want to import my videos to the PC and then burn them. It would be nice to burn straight from the camera to DVD at high quality.

The output from what I can tell is 1080p. I have a 1080p flat panel that I connect the Camera too and it looks amazing. I'm for certain the output should be 1080p. Most portable screens aren't that high quality. Unless you bring a computer monitor that supports 1080p.

Having shot video for years, I know the value of a good field monitor. I just wanted to be sure that the output (while shooting) from the HDMI was high quality and not just the playback. The output (while shooting) via RCA jacks is pretty much blah. LOL

In reality, I am not really all that concerned if the field monitor is beautiful or not. What I want is something that is relatively color accurate and more importantly BIGGER and easier to focus with. Trying to manually follow focus with built in LCD is practically impossible and quite kludgy for anything serious.

I shot a short film with a group of people last weekend. I was the camera operator and it was hard as heck to shoot some of the scenes. Locked down was fine, but there were a couple that required rack focus and follow... I was able to do it "ok" when the subject filled the screen. But when the subject was smaller in the overall scene...It was pretty much a guess...(especially when the DOF was very shallow - i.e., indoors)

Thanks for the info!

Now that I think about what you are talking about I don't think its possible to use a separate LCD screen as a Live Viewfinder. The HDMI output as far as I am aware is only for playback. Not to be used as a viewfinder. Correct me if I'm wrong somebody.

I think the problem you're having is that you want to run a HD signal into a standard definition DVD recorder. Most people don't want to do that.

Just to be clear- You're never going to get HD quality out of your DVD based solution. You may be considering DVD's to be high quality, but they're not HD. Also, for the record, I haven't moved up to bluray either due to the cost. I find that the DVD produces adequate quality for my taste.

Yes, you can use an external monitor.
