I have been using the Rode VideoMic on my 5D Mark II since a few days after I got the camera in December. It works quite well... A lot better than the built in microphone. Especially if you are shooting event's or documentary. For 100 dollars extra there is a stereo version of that microphone. For my uses the mono version works just fine.

I got a e-newsletter from B&H on recording pro-quality sound with an add-on microphone (don't know which one) and the 5D Mk II, but when I clicked on the article it didn't go through. Guess everybody else in the free world was trying to read the article at the same time!

I have a Rode NT4 stereo condenser that I like a lot. But not the one in this article.

Here is my ultimate problem with the mic replacement deal.

* no manual gain control.

The Compressor/Limiter on the camera makes serious (heck even semi-serious) audio impossible unless you have uniform sound levels. Otherwise, you will be dealing with volume levels pumping up and down constantly. Been there, done that.

I record off camera and sync in post. I use either a wireless mic and/or shotgun, and/or Rode NT4... They are either submixed prior to recording or I use the mics onboard the Sony PCM50 flash recorder. Works extremely well...but it's a pricey alternative. There are other lower priced recorders though.

I'd love to record dual, but ENG operations don't allow for clapboards. 5D Mark III, anyone?

Not quite understanding.. Are you saying you need a clapboard to sync in post or just it's too inconvenient? I have a split button on my PCM50 that I hit at the same time I hit record on the camera. It names audio files by date/time and makes it fairly easy to sync. Although, I typically just sync via the onboard audio and then dub it out.

I don't need a clapboard to sync audio, but it makes it a heck of a lot easier. But, clapboard or no clapboard, ENG isn't amenable to any sort of separate sound acquisition workflow - it would take me longer to sync the audio across all of my (normally) several hundred subclips per project than it would to edit the entire piece. I've had to do it before - my final project at the Schoolhouse in Fort Meade was shot with six cameras, one of which had audio (a line in from FOH). 19 hours of footage, six cameras to sync, and five minutes of product - it took quite a while.

I shot a 6 camera rock concert including a boom cam and outboard audio. That was a sheer joy to sync and edit.

I can't imagine using the 5D2 for ENG work anyway. Way too limited on zoom/af/exposure/audio. To me, it's a documentary/short film video camera...NOT a camcorder or ENG device.

If I had to use it, I think I'd use a battery powered submixer/limiter with either a shotgun or wireless. But certainly one of the solutions mentioned above would give you decent audio. Just not the most "dynamic"... :)

I read the b&h link when I got the email. It is a great start to improving the camera's system. However, it sounds like a few of you are way past the level of quality that I will ever be going for. I plan to get the 5D mkII and shoot some video, but it's not my primary focus...

I'll do you one better. I was hired to edit a wedding video. Little did I know they hadn't hired a shooter, there were just people in the audience, with their own cameras. I received 2 VHS-C cassettes, 5 Hi8/ Digi8's, 1 MiniDV, 1 MiniDVD (PITA to work with), 1 file (from a Flip) and 1 VHS tape. Some did one straight shot, some did clips, some left the camera recording in the bag...

There's a cheap mini outboard I've used for years, they are not the best (have a few with broken jacks) and they only serve to attenuate, no gain but do the trick. No bigger than a box of Altoids!

You could get a Beachtek box and use better mics too... mmmm...Schoeps omni and NAT packs..

I have a beachtek box and an xlr mic for my current minicam. It works well. I was figuring that I would use it on the mkII (when I get one) until I could splurge on a more compact and efficient way to record sound.

Good deal! I love the Beachteks when I can't work with real cameras.

Please excuse the derragotory reference towards little cameras, I've got a chip on my shoulder in the shape of an TK76 and it's screaming "head clog in the deck"

KILL ME NOW.. That is HORRIBLE. I hated editing my own 3 camera weddings...Couldn't even imagine that scenario. Although I did do a multiple Hi-8 analog edit from several (3) audience members back in the day. I don't miss wedding video in the least bit.

I used a Beachtek a few times. Not a bad little device.
Nice not to have "head clogs" with the 5D2. Problem is editing that darn 38.6mbps h.264 footage. Wow is it chunky...Nice looking...but chunky file sizes!
