Watch your Audio - 02-16-2010, 12:09 AM

I find that many o many of video peeps ... always put Audio on the back burner ... as if it is a "Set-it and Forget-It" part of the shoot.

I always check my audio throughout the shoot because it changes in different locations or if you are at a live event the crowd or entertainment get louder.

Also ... if you are using a mixer ... plug your headphones into the camera not the mixer unless you are using an Audio Return that gives you the audio of the ending result from the Camera ...
- I've worked with audio guys that set only the audio on their mixer and forgot to level out the camera ... yup ... lets just say this person isn't doing audio anymore.

And one more thing about audio ... if you are using 2 XLRs, make sure your camera is set to here each channel individually ... never know when one is bad the other will save you.
- Most Cameras are set at STEREO as their DEFAULT.

Something I've did early on was figure out that it is so worth it to invest in high quality, flat frequency, over the ear headphones to use while shooting. Especially when shooting with a camera mounted shotgun.

It has never made sense to me to spend so much time to get your audio setup right, just to monitor with iPod ear buds like I see so many do.

I agree ... I use the Bose Headphones and High End Sony ones ... Much clearer.

Plus lately ... for my corporate shoots ... I use a seperate mixer as oppose to the on camera audio controls.

I recently bought a Zoom H4N recorder with a Sennheiser wireless mic setup for my audio. So far the first time out worked really well.. it was very easy to setup.

Nice ... I was looking at those at one of the Video Conventions here in Houston.

The Audio guys that we use for some of our corporate gigs uses those and he loves em. How far is the range before distortion?? Or have you not tried that out yet?

I was thinking about these for maybe when I do a wedding or quince here and there ... then I can put the cameras any where with out Gaffing Down 50-100 ft of XLR cables.
