lense for volleyball video - 01-08-2012, 08:45 PM

so I'm gonna try to use the 5dii for some video of my daughter next weekend. I'm not sure what courts we will be at, but usually we need to have the tripod pretty close to the courts. I'm wondering if shooting my 24-70 and shooting at 24 will be ok, or if there will be too much what's the word I'm looking for...disproportion?? I also have a 7d..but I'm assuming it doesn't matter which camera I use...

If you're just tracking your daughter, stick with a 70-200, otherwise a 24-105 used primarily between 50-105 will do.

Well, will you be using a tripod or going handheld?

If you going for a tripod, definitely something like the 70-200 would be great. If not, it will be very shaky.

The 24 would be too wide in my opinion. You will get the whole team if that's what you are going for, but if you are aiming for your daughter specifically, I would recommend a bit of telephoto. Your 24-70 would be nice, you will get her as a full body from the bleachers and it's not too heavy to handhold for video. I would still recommend a good tripod.

Of course a video fluid head would be best, a standard still photo tripod will work fine since won't be doing too much panning.

I watched a video guy at a recent basketball tournament. He used the 5D II and 70-200 for most of his shots and a 16-35 for the upclose awards presentation (actually got in my way once ).

I am planning on setting it up and leaving it. It needs to include the entire team...so if she uses it for recruiting for college, they want the whole team view. And I have a new tripod...just for video...: )

BTW...this is club volleyball...so we sit literally on the outskirts of the court...like we have to move our feet for the server!!
