Hey Andrew. Thanks for sharing the observations from your scientific experiments.

Does anyone know:

1. Roughly how many minutes of video equal 4 gigs of data?

2. If you have a 16 gig CF card, for example, can you record video continously, and the camera will just split it into several 4 gig files? or how does that work?

Thanks!

I just expanded my comments via a blog instead.. LOL

12 minutes of 1080P is about 4GB.

It stops after 4GB due to the FAT32 file system, but multiple clips can be recorded on larger cards.

Thanks Andy. I was worried of the lack of full manual control, but as you commented this is the first generation of this new technology. It can only get better.

Nice write up Andrew. Now lets see some sample clips!

Does shooting video at high ISO change the file size like when shooting still photos?
I have no idea how H.264 CODEC works(or any other for that mater).

I am in the process of creating (compressing to smaller HD clip for VIMEO right now) a basic video clip that just has me demonstrating the exposure and IS controls. Nothing really to show as far as video quality as I pretty much just ad' lib'd over a tripod mounted camera.

To answer your question Jake.. I have no idea about the high ISO effect. My 6min+ video clip was at moderately high ISOs and it took up about 2.1GB.

The camera adjusts ISO first, then Shutter, then Aperture...pretty much in that order with most all scenes as far as I can tell. It's weird though. I shot some outdoor stuff today and it selected F32 1/320, ISO2000 WTH???

Looked great, but what jacked up auto settings. ND filters are going to be a must for outdoor DOF control.

I'll post about the video clip once it finishes compressing then uploaded.

All of this sounds too weird. I know you're an experienced video guy, but is there possibly something you could be missing regarding settings and controls?

Sure. It's possible.. But Chuck Westfall (Canon) said pretty much the same thing only to be contradicted by Vincent Lafort. Testing it first hand...I completely agree with Chuck.

It is true that you can change settings while in video mode...but it only affects the still image that you shoot while in video. It has ZERO effect on the video itself.

I will gladly eat crow if I am wrong (and be extremely happy about it). Unfortunately, I don't think so. Video is now 10% uploaded to VIMEO... 225MB compressed to 720P...

You have an accent? Sounds fine to me. I don't think anyone likes hearing his own recorded voice. I know I don't.

Nice summary. Thanks for doing that.

Thanks! The only thing I dislike more than my voice online are pictures of myself.
