A very different approach from Bruce Gliden...

WIRED Video: Street Portraiture

This was a great little video, and something I wish I could do all the time. Anytime I see someone who looks interesting in the grocery store or on the street I always think about how fun it would be to shoot them. The problem is that I always wonder how I would approach it. Now I know!

I saw this the other day...really cool. I don't have the personality to stop random people on the street and take photos.

Are the Nikon 50mm lenses as inexpensive as the Canon 50mm? I have the Canon lens and love it.

Yeah, pretty much. The 50mm 1.8 is anyway, though he was using the D3 with the 50mm 1.4 in that video, which is about $3-400. Not exactly inexpensive.

Even though on your camera the 50mm is actually a 75mm, a mild tele, its still a great lens. An excellent focal length for portraits. When I had my D50 I used my 50mm 1.8 constantly.

Now that ive switched to minolta, my 70-210 f4 pretty much stays on my camera. I love that lens. Only thing better would be a 70-200 2.8.

cool video, the one issue I see is model release, I wish he would explain he stance there. In one case he says it will only take 8 seconds hardley enough time to sign and review a model release. He legally can't do anything with these photos can he, without a model release?

He doesn't need one. They are in a public place (street), and according to what I've read, he would only need one to be extra precautious.

Model release is only required for commercial use (advertising, implied endorsement, etc). Editorial use does not require a release, and neither does artwork. So he could sell prints as art and not need a release.
