ROFL - This is sooooo true - I went to a wedding 2 weeks ago. I had my gear with me and was going to shoot a few of other friends what were there. I pulled out my 35-70 2.8 (small weddig in a small space) and mounted my d700 on the stroboframe and set the sb900 up... Yes my wedding rig was ready.
Then I met the primary with her cannon reb something and on camera flash. (oh my this is going to be interesting to watch)
The wedding was outside setup with the sun right behind the minister (always fun) at the time I was speaking to her she was set up for P shooting (you know P for professional). That backlighting likely made for some glorious images.
Inside at the reception I did notice her oc flash poping a lot on shot that I did see through her screen was a un-color balanced hard shadowed mess.
I would love to see what she finally came out with - she had to be a post processing wizard to recover from what I saw as another wedding photographer wanna be .

This is funny, I just shot my first wedding weekend before last all by myself. Using a Canon T1i bought at Best Buy for 900 using the kit lens 18-55mm. Here is the link. Let me know what you think. Just so you know it was to help my friend who couldn't afford a professional. It was a learning experience for me. Flickr: tas9195's Photostream

This IS funny...but you know, my wife and I hired a professional wedding photographer for our wedding, and we were massively disappointed with the images we got. They were terrible, the kind of thing you look at and say, "I could take a better picture than that."
We were fortunate that my wife's Dad is a hobbyist/enthusiast, and in between his pastoral duties, he shot a bunch of photos with his DSLR. His photos were vastly superior to the professional husband and wife team we paid for.
I'm still a little bitter about it.
We learned our lesson though. It doesn't really matter what people call themselves, or even sometimes what gear they have. Some people just know how to photograph better than others and know their cameras well enough to overcome the situation.

I have been shooting since 1972 (all hobby, never professional), I know that i can not shoot a wedding, when friends ask, i refer them to a true professional who i know will do a better job.
It scares me to even consider shooting a wedding, i have as much ability to do that, as i have to pilot the space shuttle.

That is so me. Ha, ha! My first wedding was with my Rebel Xti and {ONE} 2 GB memory card, all auto, and the cam froze in the middle of the reception. Needless to say, the pics sucked, and they still suck. I went through them last night to see if I could find at least one that I could edit to not suck so bad. Nope. Good thing is, though, I took video, made at least 800 shots, gave them all to the couple, and charged them like $250.00 - and they knew it was my first wedding.

I've starting doing some paid work here and there. I've turned down weddings because, like others have said, I know I wouldn't do it justice. As far as the gear comments, I lol'd, but I'm still a believer that a good photographer can take good photos with anything. I may be biased about this part as I use entry level equipment, but like any self respecting photographer will tell you, it's not just the big expensive camera doing all the work.
