beginner video help - 02-21-2011, 06:13 PM

Probably everyone knows this but me... my daughter wants to share a speech she did. It doesn't seem to want to upload via facebook...I'm guessing it is too long. Is the other option youtube? The speech can't be longer than 10 minutes and I thought fb said you could do anything shorter than 20, so I was a little surprised it wouldn't upload, but whatever...

Generally, the best format to upload is H.264 video with AAC audio in MOV or MP4 format. H.264 currently offers the best video compression available, and due to file size limitations, this format is the optimal choice for Facebook Video.

To avoid the rescaling of your video by Facebook's encoder, use a file with the larger edge of the video not exceeding 1280px. If your video is less than 1280px in size on the larger edge, try to keep your dimensions to multiples of 16px for best compression.

Keep the frame rate of your video at or below 30fps.

Use stereo audio with a sample rate of 44,100hz.

That was copied from Facebook Help. I'm guessing you have a 10 min or so file in avi format larger than 1,024MB. Use Quicktime Pro or Realplayer or a free converter to convert the movie to a smaller (more compressed) format.

youtube upped their limits to 15min... check the site for more info on file sizes.

there's a free converter called MPEG Streamclip. it will convert to just about any size, quality and format.

I recommend making it no bigger than 720x480, or however it works out in the HD size ratio. And, if there's no text, lower your quality down. Save to H.264 and in .mp4... that should keep the size down, provided the video isn't longer than 10 or 15min.

Is the video done on any kind of video editing program?

In my experience, a video with the codec h.264 with the AAC that Harris stated is good.

And also have the dimensions of your video less than 480x360. If it is in wide screen I would do 480x270.

Also set your audio to Mono as oppose to Stereo.

All of these little things will help you shrink down the size without compromising quality.

It's not the length that is stopping you from loading, it's also the video size. How many mb the file is.

Good luck getting it on.

I'm using it straight out of the camera...it is an older model. 8 mm tape straight onto hard drive. Guess I need to get it into a program and downsize it some. All three are about 2 gigs each. They won't upload on you tube either using their upgraded upload system. .....?????

I believe their upload limit is 1gb.

So, yeah ... you need to downsize them some. Or think about breaking it up into like 2 chapters to make it fit with in the Uploaders 1gb limit.
