Thumbs up Tutorial: Sekonic L-758DR calibration video - 09-30-2008, 02:09 PM

I've seen a thread on POTN initiated by TMR design that demonstated how to calibrate your L-758DR using a Sekonic calibration target and the software that is included with the meter. The process seemed to be cumbersome and prone to error which is why TMR Design came up with his thread in the first place. Trying to calibrate the meter just using the software and the manual seemed like a very hit and miss proposition.

There is now a video located on the sekonic website that shows how to calibrate the L-758DR in an easy to follow demonstration.

I now have a reason to buy the sekonic target and calibrate my 5D and MkIIn to my L-758DR and..; I hope watching this video will help others that desire this level of accuracy in their equipment.

I have the 758 and was recently thinking I haven't calibrated it yet. I wonder, how may owners have and has it made a difference?

I've been looking for a review/testimonial on-line to in the hopes of getting an answer to your question before spending the money on the target. So far nothing like that has turned up. I did find some more information on the Sekonic site discussing the histogram that seems to indicate that I already am getting the same control in my camera by using the cameras histogram with calibration target that I carry with me.

The most interesting thing I see in having the camera profile on the light meter is the ability to analyze the scene, before taking a picture, in such a manner that you will know whether or not you are losing shadows or highlights. That knowledge should give you a chance to adjust your midtone exposure to ensure that the highlights and shadows will be properly exposed. If you know that you will be unable to do so, that information would then tell you to bracket your image if you need detail in shadows and highlights.

I'll probably still get the target and then start comparing meter readings between custom profiles and stock profiles.

Can the calibration of the 758dr be done on any white/grey card? I was goping no to spend $130 on their card.
Thanks
