So I've been thinking of a blog, and after talking with a few others at the GTG today I've decided to move further along with it. I know NOTHING about it, so where is a good starting point?

• Posterous or Blogger if you want a pre-cooked solution, immediately ready.
• Wordpress if you want a microwave-dinner type solution. You host it on your own, it's very easy, great support and themes, a lot of control.
• Drupal is a lot like Wordpress.
• If you want a bake your own solution with full control over the recipe and every aspect of it, write your own using PHP/Python/Ruby along with a Framework if you want to. Total control.

Wordpress would definitely allow you the most customization and help considering the gigantic community, but I don't like popular blogging software because unless you are very good at updating it all the time, you will definitely get a lot of spam or carpet bombed by exploits.

So you can trade off a bit of customization/freedom and use Blogger or Posterious, which are hosted and updated for you.

I'm currently watching a tutorial on self hosted wordpress files. I have my own domain on eleven2.com, so I want something that is self hosted.

I just recently moved from a blogger blog to a bluehost.com hosted wordpress blog with the prophoto theme. I couldn't be happier. There is a bit of a learning curve if you haven't studied this stuff before, but it is manageable and fun to learn.

About spam, Akismet has not failed me yet and keeps all the junk out of sight until you can come along and sweep it out. It's free thru the wordpress site.

Wordpress has shown to be far better re. indexing and ranking, for me at least. Terms I never managed to rank for with my blogger blog I rank well for now. This, however, is somewhat a product of the theme I use and will vary from theme to theme and plugin set to plugin set.

I agree with the above. I had blogger and moved to wordpress. It was a little more learning involved but I love it much more!

There's also Typepad, but I don't know anything about it. Just another option.

Well I've gotten the latest version of WordPress downloaded to my computer, and updated the wp-config file as necessary. I created the SQL database and added an SQL user, and then I FTP'd the WordPress file from my computer to my /Blog directory on my host server...... but I'm still getting an error message, so there is a step that I am missing, or dont quite understand.

Hopefully I'll have a response from the tech folks at my hosting company in the morning. I've asked them to review what I've done so far and let me know what's what. I'm too tired to continue at the time. All this code has my eyes crossed.

I'm currently using Blogger- just because it was quick and easy. I've had Wordpress and Squarespace. Squarespace was my favorite, but it isn't free. I think I was paying $14 a month for it.

Check with your host they may have that feature already available for you to use...

I GOT A BLOG! I GOT A BLOG!

And I did it all by myself!!! That little problem I had with the error message was a simple case sensitive issue. I guess I had something entered wrong. WOOWHOO!

Now to find a theme, edit it, and start blogging...
