Help! Website Ranking Thingie - 11-11-2009, 09:30 PM

OK, a while ago - woulda sworn it was in this section somewhere - someone posted a link to a site that would evaluate your website and rank it. It also spelled out what was wrong with it to improve its ranking.

Ringing any bells? I cant find the thread and wanted to play on that site. HELP!

Thanks for posting, Holly.

I ran it and had a much much much higher number of inbound links that I anticipated. Do you know of any way to track down what those are?

Do you post photos on the web (forums etc) using your own website? Like www.YourWebsite/images/yourphoto.jpg. If you do, that's probably why you have so many inbound links.

Not very often. I post on flickr sometimes and add my website to the description - but that only gets me to a couple dozen, not to a couple thousand.

You have your website listed in your signature. Each time you post something new, it adds another inbound. If you go to other forums and do the same thing....it can add up quickly.

Agreed - I'm just still not sure where they all are. I could explain a few hundred of them, but that still leaves a lot that puzzle me.

I can't figure out the google thing - I track all the hits through google analytics, but not the links. I found something about how to do it, but it requires adding metadata to your site, and since I use dummy-proof stuff, I'm not sure how/where to do it. Oh well. Not enough of an issue for me to worry about figuring out right now!

Google doesn't do a very good job of keeping up with backlinks linking to your site. While it doesn't show 100%, the most complete single method of seeing exactly where your backlinks are coming from is to do a yahoo search:

http://yoursite.com

Also there are several free software's available that help with seo and site ranking. I'd recommend Web CEO as it has IMHO the best free options available. It will break down your page ranked on several factors, such as Keyword Density, Use of Meta Tags, Titles, Descriptions, Alt text, incoming and outbound links etc. It also provides some pretty useful advise on how to correct any particular place you site needs help.

or yahoo site explorer also will show you your backlink count and what sites are linking to you
