1and1 and Wordpress - 02-03-2010, 07:41 PM

I found a nice tutorial for setting up wordpress for those using 1and1.com for the technically challenged. How to Install Wordpress with 1 and 1 Hosting Antbag.com

It's good stuff. I found it extremely helpful since blogger will no longer be supporting FTP to offsite servers.

Seriously, take your stuff and run... run as far as you can from 1and1.com.

They have the absolutely worst customer service in history of web hosting companies. If you ever have a problem or need anything, you will never get any info about it. You will simply be told that your issue has been reported to the admin team. That's it. They won't(can't) give you a timeline, a straight answer, nothing. All of their support is based in India and their staff is merely in place to field support calls and tell you that your issue has been reported. That's it.

I've been in the web biz for a long time and had used them for a couple of years. I ended up moving all of my sites and all of my clients sites from them. It was one of the worst business decisions I've ever made going with them.

Seriously, find another host, trust me. I recommend LiquidWeb and LunarPages. If you call them, you get a human on the phone in minutes AND they are not only able to answer questions, but they are actually onsite where your server is and can physically touch your server if need be. They are all network administrators too, so they are very tech saavy and can help you immediately.

3...2...1...HOST BASHING!

All kidding aside, 1and1 is pretty bad. They were the first web hosting company I used back in 2002. They were decent back then but progressively got worse in all areas.

I hope thing continue to go well for you.

I've been with 1and1 about 8 or so years now, with very little problems. I've got about 10 sites now there. There have been little hickups along the way, but they were quickly remedied. I had worse luck with a couple of the local hosts I had prior to them, including one I had a LARGE account with (think developer level with $100-200 a month bills - which in 2000 was huge).

They also recently rolled out a new webmail interface that is awesome.

As for Wordpress and 1and1 - pretty easy. In fact I just installed another one today for a project - took all of 15 minutes, and that included me installing new themes and tweaking them (it's a photoblog type also). I'll probably be installing another wordpress blog tomorrow and new theme also.

Wow - you guys must have some bad kharma or something...

I've been using 1and1 now for 6 years? I currently have more than a dozen different sites hosted on them and the only time i've had ANY Problem with any sites is when I tried switching a clients domain name to them... and NONE of it was 1and1's fault - in fact, they stepped up to bat for me during a conference call with the other company because they were giving me bad info.

None of my sites are ever down - can't recall a single problem any of the clients have had...

I had issues with 1and1 and Dreamhost. I now host all my own stuff in a colo facility. I've also given the idea to setup a hosting services for people to use. But until I start backing everything up.. To much trouble..

wow I'm suprised. I've been with them for almost 2 years and never had any problems. In fact the other day I spent 7 hours trying to fix a picture upload problem with my word press (just uploaded the upgrade) and called the customer support, they had me up and running in like 2 minutes. Wish I had called them like 6 hours earlier!

In the last week I've set up 5 wordpress blogs on 1and1 (and since deleted 2 of them - they were quick experiments) without problems.

Tomorrow I'll be trying something new: Moving a blog that is already set up and in use to a subdomain of the same URL. That should be fun. (gotta learn how to do it)

1and1's tools and services are great... and cheap. That's why they're the largest host out there...

The problems start when you try to do anything that the general support people can't do, which is actually most things. Their support is completely removed from the outside. You can call support, but you will get an outsourced person in another country who cannot do anything but very minor things for you. Anything else requires an admin who you will never ever ever be able to get to. They will file a ticket for you and tell you that the issue has been elevated or escalated. That's the extent of it.

I had over 60 accounts with them for several years and when things worked it was great. But once I had a problem, server went down, or became extremely slow, spam issues in their email, etc... it became extremely frustrating to get anything done. They'd tell me whatever I wanted to hear, in order to complete the call and get you off the phone. Then nothing would happen. Call back, and they pretend that you've never called, having to try and explain your entire story over and and over again... only being told that the problem has been reported to the admin team and it will be resolved as soon as possible.

Bah, I literally almost lost my entire web business because of this company. Like someone else suggested, try googling their name 1and1 and read a little bit about what others say.

Web hosting is such a commodity business now, the cheapest wins... if you're looking for uptime and support, it is virtually impossible to find anymore.
Sorry to rant, but whenever I hear the name 1and1 my left eye starts to twitch and my palms start sweating.. hehehe

Yeah, but just about the same can be found for any large company, and 1and1 is the largest of the web hosters.

Just like any large company, and many small ones, you WILL encounter problems.
